Carrier rooftops? Start ordering replacement heat exchangers :D
What's that heap to the very right? Looks like the condenser section of an old Trane but too big to be.

You guys are all a bunch of women. If you had any reasoning at all you would study the situation before spewing your crap. The building was a retrofit with 10' ceiling so there was no room for ductwork, this is California so weather plays no role in the installation, the owners wanted to keep costs down so custom duct was out of the question. I bet 75% of you guys that spew your thoughts about the job couldn't lay out 1/2 the fittings I can. I've been doing layout for 20 years and if there was a call for it I could lay the job out, fabricate it and instasll it. How many of you jokers can do anything other than put it together?

yea, i can see the quality.......pleum box(insulated??)...smoke pipe (not even spiral) and those adjustable 90's (stamped long radius??)....i commend your engineering dept. also.........i guess you get what you pay for. you've got about $300.00 worth of metal there, i hope you gave your customer a deal.......

Hey Squeekie....I'm not trying to put you down..well maybe a little, but, insulation isn't an issue??? What the Fudge are you talking about? Anyways everyone who has responded here so far has extensive experience in the field...added up it's probably over 100 years of combined experience in the field, and we all sort-of had a community question: Who puts ductwork on a roof (black, hot as hell roof) and dosn't insulate it? I guess Californians don't care about wasting energy, who cares about rolling blackouts anyway?Sorry to rant, I just don't get it. PS: The ductwork looks straight and well sealed, other than it not being insulated, I would say it's an excellent installation. Good-Luck to you.:)

The duct is circlelined and the plenun is 1" lined. And, yes the older women who owned the thrift store were given a good deal.

OK Squeekie, I see it is insulated...well, you folks out west do things differently than here I can see that clearly, but different isn't necessarily wrong...I apologise for what I said earlier about your install. I wouldn't ductline it myself, but it is insulated, and I have to say the end result does look excellent. My hat's off to you.Usually around here we only use liner for noise, and sparingly at that especially with all the indoor air quality issues that have been raised lately. I hope you will post some more pics of future installs, it's really interesting to see how it's done elsewhere. When I first looked at it, it looked like it was done in a foreign country. Well I guess it still does, but good-Luck to you anyway! :)

We were a bit hard on our new member. My only crack was about the Carrier junk I hate and I said the same thing to Dicey when he posted his fine Carrier installs. At least Squeek has a decent camera :D
In some areas exposed ducts on the roof are common. And sometimes you gotta do what the budget and building conditions dictate. Spiral costs a bundle. If you look at it, workmanship looks good. The mastic, the quality of the boxes, round pipe size reduction as it goes on. Obviously plenty of airflow. He appears to be replacing what was there. Coulda reused existing duct and had lots of leakage. Or run flex - as we've seen on the Wall of Shame before!
At least he posted. I bet most who commented have never had a job they wanted to show us!

It is true that circleline duct adds alot of restriction so the tonnage was amped up to compensate. The duct goes straight to registers down below, so there is plenty of flow. This job is 1/2 mile from the beach, so climate is good.

Good eye. They are Rheems.

04-20-2004, 01:26 PM
Using the good stuff here huh? But Mickey D's gets the Carrier? Couldn't tell these were Rheem green. Use any of Rheem's larger units? Seem like decent stuff.
Diceman
04-20-2004, 05:32 PM
Baldy Boy, Carrier has it's problems but even you have to admit, on commercial RTU's, they are better than Rheems.
BaldLoonie
04-20-2004, 07:35 PM
We don't do that much RTU work but sure have changed a few Carrier heat exchangers. Buddy at the commercial outfit nearby says about 5-6 years and good luck. What's wrong with the new Rheem stuff, and I don't mean the residential gas packs. We put 4 on a country club, sure were easy to install and much quieter than the Bryants already up there.

Diceman, I'd take a Rheem over a carrier anyday!

I've seen rooftop duct many times, usually on older buildings where wasn't space above cieling for duct. Both round and square, but it dose help energy use to put it indoors, not to mention potential for leaks.
At least they didn't have to run duct indoors. I did a gift store with wall to wall breakable junk everwhere, hung the furnace, coil and duct and only broke about $60.00 in stuff. All that junk precariously balanced fell anytime I bumped anything!

Squeekie,
Nice job. Clean install.
I got a big laugh from the first posts! They are not aware that from the Rockies west we do things better. Different. And then go to the southwest (So-Cal, Arizona and So-Nev.)we live in another world.
Keep up the good work.

Of course I have only been installing and working on Carrier units for 30 years or so.
And Rheem have improved, but there commercial rtu's units were el junko for as long as I can remember.

I thought Circle-Line has been banned because of the exposure to the cancer causing unlined fiberglass ?
Duct work like this is common place in many older commercial roof tops here but they sure do get ugly... A 12" Circle-line duct is = to a 10" duct because of the 1" inside lining and boy is it expensive. even with the 1" inside linign without insulating the exterior with cloth and ahrb ball that sheetmetal boils :-(

Shid, if I worked in California I would put all my ductwork on the roof. That way when they had one of those earthquakes the people would not get hit with falling ductwork. Less of course the roof falls in too. But then, in that case, they would sue the roofing contractor before the mechanical contractor.
Squeekie don't listen to these guys. If someone didn't try something new once in awhile there would be no new invention. Let us know how it works out.

No I didn't see it. I am generally glued to the History Channel. But I heard that California got reduced to a little island? Hey that would be a shame.
