I am a Maintenance Technician and (currently inactive) Mechanical Contractor who has educated myself out of a job. Well, not really-I'm still working, but am ready to take my career to the next level.
My background is service tech., but I just finished my MBA and am tired of crawlspaces/attics/rooftops - so I'm thinking Sales/Marketing or some sort of work with a major equipment manufacturer.
I'll probably just keep doing service from the way the job market looks...

First of all congratulation on your MBA. That is a nice achievement. You must be the most highly educated Maintenance Technician I ever heard of. Had a bunch of ITT grads, same for the community college. Even had a couple of BFA persons who worked with me, but a master's---- times must really be tough.
Did you talk to the company you work for now. Had a kid once who graduated from Purdue with a BS Mechanical Eng. He used to work summers with us. As soon as graduated they put him in the office, national mechanical contractor
Not to badmouth this profession, but you have dedicated a lot of time to your education, you really need to look around and see where it can take you. Leave the hot attics in the rearview mirror. Keep them for a when I was young story.
Want to be CEO, start your own company. Everybody else will expect you to work long and hard for it.

Starting your own company is a lot more difficult than people think. I think I'll just stay with what I've got & keep sending out resumes.

Not to sound kocky but MBA's right now are a dime a dozen and not many being bought. Really! You would have been better off to have invested in being an auto mechanic ... something people need and want. I believe that is the direction of this economy that service work will be in more demand. Maybe you will find something but probably unlikely now given this tanked economy.

Yeah, you're right about that! MBA's have a worse rep than Lawyers right now. As far as auto mechanics, I am already a HVAC Mechanical Contractor working part-time as a one-man shop operation (in my free time from my 40+ hour Maintenance Tech job) and that has turned out to be more headache than it is worth, so I have gone inactive with my state license this year. I didn't even make enough to cover my liability insurance last year.
It is an extremely competitive business to try & get into. If you can't devote full time to it, you'll never be successful, & if you do you're tied to it worse than marriage!

Have you checked into JCI or Trane. I bet they could find a place for you.

That's where I'm looking... Goodman, ICP, Emerson Climate Technologies - There has to be something. I'm at a disadvantage because I can't relocate right now; but I could commute in southern middle Tennessee, or work a regional territory in the southeast based from Huntsville.
