Do it for the grand kids, it's important.
Don't be a pussy, I would hate thinking I don't have control over myself and am slowly ruining what little time I have here.

Toughest thing I've done in life is to quit smoking. Keep at it. You have to hate those damned cigarettes. You have to constantly be aware that they are your enemy and every time you put one in your mouth they are attacking you and beating you.
Just a side note; When I had my heart attack and was being packaged to be put in the chopper an attendant was asking me personal stats. When he asked if I smoked the cardiologist cut in and said "hell no he doesn't smoke. If he did he wouldn't be answering you, he'd be dead." Just food for thought.
Hmmmmm, did someone say "food"? Oh, that's my current vice.

Good Luck! It took me numerous attempts before I made it. A big help for me was toothpicks, I carried a box in the truck all the time. The nicotene is tough, but don't under-estimate the need for the hand & mouth thing. (No a#%holes needed to make jokes).
The best thing about my ex-wife smoking, is both my sons HATE it, and have never picked up the habit. And, if she keeps it up... well who knows?

Tried several times, finally with the patch it worked.
Don't miss em, and they do smell.
Quit over, hell, I don't remember....6 - 7 yrs ago..don't matter, I don't even think about it.
Stick with it, if you fall of the horse get back on until you make it.

Yep i quit 6½ ago. 2 of my friends quit also at that time. i used the patch and they used the phone. After i quit i was able to increase my productivity by 30%. That was a hell of a big jump in pay. No more break times for a smoke. I work now for hrs before i have reason to slow down, FOOOOOD. I put on 10 lbs but lost it again. Good luck len and use a help aide if needed and deffinantly call someone before you lite up.

When I quit, something that helped me was to get a tin of altoids. When they were stuffed in my pocket it felt like a pack of cigarettes. I would not even think about it, reach to get a smoke and instead, I got something else.

barbeque sunflower seeds helped me alot, most important thing is to get quit long enough when you try to get momentum, so aleast a week. Thing that keeps me from starting up again is just the fear that if I smoke one I might not be able to quit. I read on this sight that hitting O2 gives the same buzz as that first smoke, Ill have to test that. Anyway good luck

I quit 9 years agoon March 24. I finally quit reaching in my pocket. I had a friend who put toothpicks in his pocket 25 years ago and still has them. That crutch turned into another one. Not as unhealthy tho. "You can do it, we can help". Heard that before??? No kidding, hang in there and do it. My wife, bless her heart, tried to quit when I did. One morning she woke me at 5:oo a.m. saying she was going to have a damn cigarette. Still is. I can't help her if she won't help herself.

Now you know that it is not cool to smoke any more. They won't let you smoke at work, in restaurants, sporting events. You look like an idiot standing outside in the cold trying to get a smoke in. The patch is the way to go.
It cost me $100 bucks for the patches. My motivator is that if I am stupid enough to start again then it will cost me another $100 bucks. And you know that you can’t smoke any more.
so far so good, survived the weekend, was a little hard on broomhilda and her demon seeds, but i apoligized, and all is well, but today was another matter rough day on the road, without that hand and mouth action, sucked on more candy then i can remember, thanks all for the encouragement,i'llkeep you all posted,

I quit smoking september 4, 2002.
I've tried about a half dozen times to quit before that. One time I even paid 60 bucks for acupuncture. Nothing worked.
Then I got really sick and couldn't smoke if I wanted to. I was out of commission for a week and far less than 100% for over a month.
I don't even crave them. life is great:D

Yes guys, I wish I would have stopped long ago for good.I saw a bumper sticker on a truck after being diaginoised with lung cancer. It said Cancer cures smoking, it didn't hit home until then. I wish you all luck and prayers to stop smoking, I stopped after I learnt the verdict.Slow learner I quess.
Then after you find out and turn to god for help. You realize you did this to yourself, why would he listen now. It was the hardest thing learning how to prayer
to god, after he gave me this healthy body and I abused it
and let the devil into it. Took for granted how many people
don't have use of their organs or body parts. But with God's help I might be around awhile. How could I be so selfish and hurt my family this way.Let the cig co's have control over me, we don't like no one telling us what to do.
We're American's. So Guys take it from me. Stop while you still have a chance. The other guy this happens to could be you. ed0612

Don't be so hard on yourself Ed. We all have our faults, I drink too much beer on occasion for one thing. Not tryng to portray you as a victim but years ago the marketing campaign of many companies led you to believe smoking was OK.
Matter of fact, it's glamourous and will get you girls.
As a kid, everyone smoked, on TV, in planes, everywhere.
In time, we realized the effects of it but overcoming it has not been easy for many. We all should live on an island, esting only food we grow and abstaining from all vices and toxins, but...........we are humans, and God knows that.
Good luck, I see many years ahead for you.

Dice, I'm just accepting responibility for my actions. When I smoked no one could tell me anything. If my story could stop one person from ever lighting up again that would make my day. So I prayer for you guys that the wisdom will come to you .ed0612

I sure wish I could quit. I am 25, have been smokin' since 15.....damn friends.
I have tried a few times but a I am a real bastard after about 3 hours. I am affraid it is either smoking or divorce.
I could probably quit if I had something to do..to keep my mind off it and if those around me could respect my attempt and not light up in front of me. OH, and the stress. If I had nothing to worry about would be great too.
I have the motivation. My grandmother has been fighting COPD for over 2 years and is near the end of her losing battle. She has expressed that she would rather die than continue suffering...sounds like motivation enough.
As far as illness....I don't care if I am bed-ridden, the hosiptal staff will either wheel my ass outside for a smoke or I will crawl out the door. :D
Someday......someday. 'Till then good job to all of ya that have beat the demon of addiction.

That is also like how I came to quit. I was so sick that I had gone 3 1/2 days without a smoke before I realized it. It was a great start to quiting. Between being sick to my stomach, hacking and coughing, the sweats and fevers, etc etc I swear my body had purged alot of crap out and after a few days of eating really good food and drinking alot of water my physical cravings were gone. No my mentle stuff is another issue....
Smoke free since Nov 99!
well its been one week and i'll tell you its been hell, thats why im at this computer at 5:45 on a sat.morning.ive got too say that as much as i was tempted too spark one up,i got to thinking about eds thread there, and it scares hell out of me.im not saying im cured far from it,but i believe that drug addicts could [robaly kick their habits faster than i could probaly beat this thing, what a *****,everyone in the house is walking on egg shells trying not to piss me off.oh well later,

My thoughts and prayers are with you in this battle. If you give in then that one smoke your missing, you'll say it wasn't worth it. Is that whats driving me crazy. You can do anything you set your mind too. Once you give in, your back to square one again.ed0612

I smoked for 30 years and had a accident that put me in situation of almost losing my hands. I lost two fingers on my right hand and almost lost my entire left hand. When I left the hospital the doctor told me that I came in as a smoker and was leaving as nonsmoker. He told me not to have any smokes, chocolate or caffeine for eight weeks or risk losing the left hand. Blood supply was critical. Not much of a choice in my opinion. So nine years later I am smoke free and still have my left hand. You can do it, Len.

Damn right. I have Pnemonia right now as I sit here. I went to the Doc today after not being able to brethe for a while. It goes a bit beyond Pnemonia for me. They say I won't be able to fight it off unless I quit smoking because my lungs have weakend so much.
I should have known to quit a while ago when every drag I took started feelinglike sucking down needles.
SO....I'm quiting. Tonight is night number 1. That's why I can't sleep. It's now 3:15am and all I can think about is lighting up. Figured I'd better read through this post for some encouragement. I don't know how y'all got through the withdrawls but I am going to do it, no matter what. I paid $200 for medications today and I'll be damned if that money is going to waste.
As I mentioned above....my grandmother has COPD, so I can look to her too see what I am saving myself from too.
Worst damn part is my wife refuses to quit. I want to smoke even if I see someone light up on TV, not to mention smelling it  . Almost everyone at work smokes too. Oh, GRRRR, they'd better stay away from me tomorrow.
I also have a dentist appointment tomorrow too. It's a nice long drive to the destist's office, that's when I LOVE to smoke.
SO....congrats to all that have quit. I'll let you know how I feel in a week. :D
It's only been 16 hours since my last one and I can tell a big difference already......I can breathe better, but I'm a cranky SOB.
OK, I'll shut up now.
Oh...and congrats on the one week Len.

I quit 5 years ago in February. Don't stop trying . this is the best thing you can do for yourself. The downside for me is after 5 years it isn't the cigarettes I'm just naturally a cranky sob. Good luck.
