View Full Version : Question about contractor quote and system choice

I live in Western NC where we have fairly moderate climate. This past Dec and early Jan have been colder than normal and on a few days our heat pump was overwhelmed and became ineffective. In the summer we only use AC about 60 day per year max, usaually much less.

I would like to replace our contractor grade HP unit for a better one and add a gas furnace as backup for the colder days.

We got a quote on a Trane system that I think might be overkill. We were quoted an XV95 (61K/95K btu) with
an XL15i. The new furnace was to be integrated with our existing Arzel Airboss zoning unit and reuse the current coil (FCX3600C). We don't currently have natural gas but the gas company is set to have it brought in from the street. The contractor would have to run about 25 feet of gas line through an open ceiling (web trusses) to the meter. The vent would have to be run about 10 feet to get to an ouside wall. The contrator would also replace all the lineset.

The quote was for about $ and didn't include any of the Clean Effects or any t-stats. I think the unit is sized right because they did extensive measurements.

I think the price is too high but I was also concerned that I wouldn't get my money's worth due to the lack of utilization (if I lived in a Northern state it would be a no brainer). I was wondering what other configurations I should look at that will provide reliable heat and AC with a budget of around $. I would prefer a system with emphasis on the HP but with a good furnace. Reliability is a priority. Perhaps the XL15i with a different furnace?

I like what I hear about Trane and want to stay with a good brand.

The tax credit is not really a consideration since we were also looking at a new water heater. I don't want to make a model selection based on that. I hope I'm not bending the rules by stating my budget. I'm not looking for a quote I just want to make sure I'm getting a fair deal.

First off, let met let you know I am in your direct service area so I may have a conflict of interests.

I applaud you with idea of going hybrid heat or dual fuel, as you know the sustained cold temps we recently experienced were lower than design temps and made worse by the length of duration. It was unusual.

I would like to know why they decided to reuse the existing evaporator coil. Could you provide greater detail to your situation?

That's not a matched Trane coil you are reusing. Who knows what performance & efficiency you will get with the 15i. Certainly nothing rated with a Trane either. Sounds like a mistake to me.

The Federal tax credit is 30% of the investment, up to $1500 max credit, so you'll get more $$ back if applied to the HVAC system replacement, rather than the water heater.

Also, regarding the coil, the incremental cost can't be more than 15-20% of your existing proposal.....so why not do the full system and have the peace of mind, and full system performance and warranty?

Given that your backup heat requirements are infrequent, you could go with a much cheaper single stage furnace. I find Trane dealers way overpriced in this area. Try carrier or Rheem.

I don't know why they didn't include a replacement matched coil or what their thinking was. The direction that I gave them was to come up with a good reliable system.

Sounds like I need another quote from another contractor.

Being in area, I disagree with you regarding single stage. Our design temps (and this does not take into total account of elevation, infiltration from wind sheer (difference of being in valley or on mountain with 100mph sustained winds, and it can significantly matter if on North side of mountain or Southside) are 16 deg and 85 for cooling. While Hendersonville is in differing eco climate, it borders a temperate rain forest, dehumidification even without high temps makes latent removal HUGE.

I agree. The days of replacing the condensor and reusing the coil are gone.
Match it if you want it to work correctly.

:-) Been trying to take the high road here, but you could call me. I do want your system to make you comfortable.
