View Full Version : Keeping second Performance heater jet off?

I have a Carrier Performance heater, installed a year ago or so. It works fine,
only...I have a small 880 sq.ft condo with the unit in the hall closet.

Since I live in So. Calif. the single stage does the job quietly and yes, efficiently too. I don't like it when the unit decides on its own it wants to kick in the noiser second burner jet. It's unneeded and too noisy.

I've fiddled with the thermostat, but it's a bit confusing. I did manage to adjust how many minutes the first jet should be on until the second one fires on. I basically set it so long that the 2nd burner should not come on at all.

This worked for awhile, but now the 2nd jet wants to come on like 2 minutes before the temp is reached. It seems to have no rhyme or reason as to when that 2nd jet wants to kick in.

I think the thermostat and the furnaces onboard electronics aren't working together.

I'm not asking for DIY, but I'm thinking of having the tech just completely circumvent the onboard part that kicks in that second burner.

Any thoughts, suggestions, ideas welcomed.

Yep.

have its yearly service done. And ask teh tech while he is there to disable second stage.

Hmmmm, a timer for 2nd stage. How sad. An oversized furnace, how sad.

Yes, there are ways around going to high that a tech can do for you.

Or the one Steve found yesterday. 4 years old, was set up to run only on low and the homeowner heated the house just fine. Guess how oversized that one was!

I wanted to keep with a high end Carrier furnace, so what were my options?
Do they make the Performance models in many btu sizes? I thought they were limited to certain btu's.
It's the same size as the one put in 20 years ago when the condo was built, that Carrier
was bulk mass quantity quality I think.

If I gone smaller, I doubt I would have saved huge bucks. Also, would a cheaper smaller furnace be as quiet
and well made?
