Hey I took some advice and switched my Aprilaire 760 from cold water feed to the hot water side, and my humidity levels have gone up from low 20's to low 40's !

Now to avoid mold issues you want to make sure your humidifier is controlled by a humidistat with an outdoor temp sensor.

Now you have 50 gallons of HOT water going down your drain.

Not really.

Before it ran 24/7 to maintain 20%RH. Now it only runs 4 hours(Just a guess).

One day I will put an empty 1 gallon plastic jug under the drain hose of my bypass humidifier and see how many gallons/hour of hot water I am waisting.

Take care.

Why don't you install a Humidifier that does not waste water?

Why don't you install a Humidifier that does not waste water?

Because that's what I bought when I bought the heat pump :)

Does a great job at adding humidity. Not sure about how good of a job it does at wasting water.

Take care.

Not really, I know I'm using water, but I've noticed it's not even warm. I will pick up a outdoor humidistat, I'm thinking it's kinda set and forget right?

Not warm how? When it's coming out of the drain?
Water cools when it evaporates, maybe thats what you're noticing.

I've often wondered about people using hot water for their humidifiers and how much it jumps up the gas bill. Maybe it's not as bad as I think it would be.

That would be a perfect example of evaporative cooling.

Yes, my humidistat is mounted to my return plenum and the temperature sensor is outside. As the outside temp falls it automatically reduces the relative humidity inside, no condensation, no foggy windows and it's still comfortable. Best benefit is less chance of condensation in your insulation creating a perfect breeding ground for mold.

My contractor installed one made by General but Aprilaire also has one.

Your going to waste water or electricity. Pick one. Humidifiers don't run for free. Hot water works.

Not sure I understand. Maybe you weren't aware of this

Ted,

If you like that aprilaire rebranded style humidifier more power to you.. I installed about 10 of those units and in my area the pad was lucky to last more than two weeks.. I ended up going back to the standard aprilaire large bypass because of customer complaints.. Just to let you know I changed all the installed units to the standard at no charge to my customers to make sure they were happy..My mistake for installing these wick style units in the first place.. These units have the same problem in my area as the old drum style units had...

i would not install any "bath" style hums, perfect breeding ground for a wide range of diseases, like legionnaires disease. Stuff like that likes to grow in dark, warm, and moist environments. The better, and healthier choice would be minimum of a flow through. But a hum that boils the water is better, kills of any growth, just make sure u clean it out once in a while....my 2 cents

Plus, in my experience. They dont work too well. I've installed a couple AA brand wick style humidifiers. Not really sure what to think about them, I'd make sure to keep them clean and if they work for you then your golden.
