We have a gas furnace and a heat pump and this new thermostat. I have been playing with it for a week trying to figure out how to set it so the heat pump will run at a colder temp. it seems that the aux heat option is always kicking in. I know that it is supposed to kick in if the heat pump cannot get the home to the set temp. after a certain amount of time, but the heat pump is not even trying most of the time. Even at 40-50 degrees out the heat pump barely tries before it is like nevermind...have at it aux heat and the gas kicks in. This is a replacement thermostat and the other one was set at different settings and the HP ran a lot longer and to a colder temp and I could just call the guy back out, but I would really like to figure this out myself so I can adjust it when I want. Also what are some suggested settings for how cold it should be out before you allow the gas furnace to be the main heat. I am in Ohio. (If that makes a difference) The house is also 2800SF. 4 ton unit. (Rheem)
Thanks!

If you paid someone to install it for you, they should make it work for you. Otherwise, you are not getting your $$$ worth.
Call the co back out and tell them to make it work to your satisfaction. Tell them carefully and clearly what you want, and after they do it ask them to explain it to you.
Let us know how it turns out.

Should have the guy come back out and set it up like the other one was.
The heat pump should be allowed to run, until it can't handle the heating load anymore. Weather that is 35 or 15°F outdoor temp doesn't matter to the heat pump.
The info you want is in the installer manual(Yeah, I know, there explanations leave a lot to be desired).

Maybe your timing out aux heat instead of staging it. Be carefull to understand the adaptive intelegent recovery as that will try to build a memory of your homes recovery times and temps to shorten or lenghten aux heat cycles...A.I.R. can bring on aux in as little as 1 degree if your manually adjusting but if left alone it will start holding aux heat out as it memorizes the demands.. So read the user manual closely try understand what you can then make a list of questions and call for service if theres no continuity between the manual and the way its operating...

They may have the AUX set for a lock out until low temp and Droop Control. That means that even if its warm out if the system has to recover more than 2° than it will ask for backup heat also. Anyway an IAQ properly set can be IMHO the best available. They have many abilities including to damage or destroy machines if set wrong. Beware of mistakes!
