Hi Gary,
It is amazing that with all these incidents that 90% of all HVAC contractors do not do whole house CO testing on all jobs and most have not even attended any organized training.

You are way off base here Jim. It's more like 99.9%

ESCO Institute and Bacharach have just published a new book on Carbon Monoxide. It is hot off the press and is a great resource. It also covers combustion analysis.

The title of the book is: "Carbon Monoxide, A Clear and Present Danger". You can purchase it at their website: http://www.escoinst.com

Great to see you posting these!!!!!

I came here to do just that.

It's time our industry takes responsibility for the equipment we install and to also be the EXPERTS our customers expect us to be!

If you don't test, you don't know!

MechAcc:

Your posts and links are great. Keep up the great work. This is the most complete and useful collection of CO examples anywhere. Anyone who reads these links cannot be anything but convinced as to the importance of this issue.

Did you know that HVAC-Excellence now has a technician certification on Carbon Monoxide? HVAC-Excellence and Bacharach have teamed up to educate, test and certify technicians on CO. Then technicians are able to provide customers and utilities with evidence of their expertise. Bacharach is scheduling carbon monoxide classes with interested parties. If your local wholesaler, equipment distributor, contractor or local utility would like to schedule a CO class followed by a certification test they can do so by contacting Bacharach at http://www.bacharach-training.com and contacting any of their trainers as listed on their site.

??? Dirty furnace filter caused CO poisoning. Jim, Rudy, Mark, Tim or has anyone else heard of this one causing CO? The only furnace that I personally know that caused this was an old Green Colonial low boy. The model where they had a primitive high temp secondary heat exchanger in the blower compartment with the filter rack right above the heat exchanger. Filters if ill fitting or too dirty would get sucked down onto heat exchanger and burn.

Mark,
The answer is yes. I have seen several closet installations with dirty filters that caused the take-off of the return at the furnace and leaky blower doors to pull the room into a major vacuum. I have seen more dirty filters poison people than cracked heat exchangers.

This can definately cause a major depressurization.

More often I see systems that have too little return air and ductwork that is not sealed.

Joist bays panned off to act as return duct and holes cut in by electricians and plumbers.

I worked for a company years ago that would actually cut 6x8 grills into the down-drop when a customer complained about "noisy ducts". The return drop would get sucked in whenever the fan came on and make noise. 6x8 grill later, problem gone.

I would bet that fewer people actually do depressurization tests than do CO testing.

There was a very bizarre story in the news a while back about a man who was found dead of co poisoning in his car, on the road. It was originally thought that the vehicle was the cause, but the source was determined to be a small, smoldering charcoal briquet bbq grill he had placed in the trunk.

That's a very sad post. The one I was referring to happened several years ago. Not a suicide. Some guy in a Cadillac with the grille in the trunk, not lit, just smoldering.

is carbon monoxide what you get on an 1973 residential gas heat dx unit that has the front panel cover put on upside down?

if so let me describe what it's like.

the gas collects at the ceiling and as the space fills up it goes lower and lower.

if you are underneath the gas you're ok..totally normal..til you sit up or stand up.(if in bed)..into the gas layer.

once you sit up into the gas ..immediately your heart begins thumping HARD in your chest...you'll feel fine..big confusion at the MAJOR THUMPING. You have maybe 15-20 seconds before you pass out.

Somehow i knew it was gas..had time to run down the hallway into the den..fading as i opened the sliding glass door and dove out. I passed out before i hit the ground
for a few seconds only.

30 degree f concrete and sucking in clean air felt good actually. i was only 16 or 17...was sound asleep...i only awoke because my mother was screaming, panicking about a heart attack...i yelled..It's gas!..and ran..she made it out right behind me. Forget the heroism escort ma out stuff...15-20 seconds and you are out.

If the house had filled up with gas so that i had inhaled it while in bed asleep...no chance.

I was the kid that lit the pilot and put the cover on upside down...it fit well, thought it was right..how was i to know it mattered.

Did not notice any ill effects later in the day...felt fine right after.

Turned off the heat..opened the doors and windows..put the cover on correctly..all was well within a few minutes.

The cat was non affected...on the floor.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Portable Generator Death Reports Double:
CPSC Staff Discusses Ways to Reduce Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Deaths

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)
today released a new staff report (pdf) announcing that reports of
generator-related carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning deaths doubled in
recent years. In 2003, CPSC had reports of 36 deaths from CO poisoning
associated with portable generators. In 2002, there were 40 deaths
reported. This was a 100 percent increase from the reported 18 deaths in
2001 and 20 deaths in 2000. From 1990 through 2003, 228 CO poisoning
deaths associated with portable generators were reported to CPSC. CPSC
staff held a forum today to discuss the new data and possible ways to
reduce the risk from generators.

"If you use a gasoline-powered generator, set it up outside in a dry
area, away from air intakes to the home," said CPSC Chairman Hal
Stratton. "Opening doors and windows or operating fans to ventilate will
not prevent CO build-up in the home. Even with a CO alarm, you should
never use a gasoline-powered generator inside your home or in a garage."

At today's forum, CPSC staff described the typical hazard scenarios in
which generator-related CO poisoning deaths occurred. About 40 percent
of the deaths (89) occurred during the winter months. Almost 70 percent
of the deaths occurred at home, often with the generator in a
basement/crawlspace or in a garage/enclosed carport. About 26 percent of
fatal generator incidents involved more than one death. Adults ages 25
and older accounted for about 80 percent of CO poisoning deaths
associated with portable generators. The majority (72 percent) of the
victims were male. "Virtually all of these CO poisoning deaths could
have been prevented by keeping the generator away from the home or
attached garage," Stratton said.

Attendees at the forum included generator and engine manufacturers,
voluntary standards organizations, consumer groups, retailers,
state/local health officials, and medical professionals. These groups
discussed technical approaches and public awareness strategies to reduce
the CO risk and also emphasized that a generator must never be used in a
home, garage, basement, or crawlspace. CPSC has more details about the
safe use of generators at: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/pubs/portgen.html
