Well, old Chad, there is not sense going ice fishing unless you have a shanty. Stick your picky in ice water and the feeling will come back. Been there done that. :)

I gotta tell this..
Years back during the Viet-Nam conflict, I was contracted to the Air Force to help in developing the Robert Fulton Recovery system, to rescue downed pilots..
The method uses a C-130 with a 30 foot Cow-Catcher boom that catches, ties off and cuts a line that goes up to a large balloon and down to the pilot...
The project went well and every time we got the system working, the Air Force added another task to it...
Ground pick-up...Whupped it..
Nite Pick-up...Noooo' problem Just light the lift line and package a 5000 Volt Mallory battery and the pilot can see...Whupped it...
Water Pick-Up...Go to Point Magu in Cal. and get some Navy seal types to put the dummy in the Lil' raft....Whupped it.
Water Pick-up at might....Found out real damn quick that the connector Mallory put on the 5000 Volt battery...Not working reaaaaaaal' good in the salt water..Seal team refused to....mess with battery...But..We Whupped it..
Ice Pick up....Nooo...problem...Fly to Miniot North Dakota and use a frozen Lake....
As we located the lake in question and made a couple of passes the Ice fisherman were all along the edges in Lil' houses like things...They all were waving and being nice...Till we turned on base leg and started final, Gear down, Full Flaps and Full Reverse on all 4 of the 6000 Horsepower Allisons at the moment of touchdown...Since once the engines were reversed at that power, their was Noooo' visiblity and nose wheel steering was naught, steering was done with assymetrical power of the props..
After we had stopped, and outboard engines were secured, we could see the damage... We hesitated unloading our IH-Scout with the Recovery packages inside....Most of the .....less secure fishing huts were...not on the lake any longer...Most were now somewhere amongst the tree line...In Little pieces...
It was amazing to me that once the individuals found out what we were doing...There was absolutely no hard feelings at all.. That's true American spirit...
After 3 weeks testing on the lake...We Whupped it...

Go up to Upper Red Lake on the State owned part. Paper said they were getting pound and a half Crappies. Seems that 8 yrs ago the tribes about wiped out the Walleye population and the crappies took off. Should be some 2 pounders coming out of there too. Saw a four pounder mounted on a bait shop wall on Minnetonka once. But it was caught like 50 yrs ago.

My favorite sport is scuba diving. The new craze up here is diving under the ice on Lake Champlain. There is a certain certification that is needed and they wear a dry suit with winter clothing under it.
They use a chain saw to cut a big triangle in the ice and in they go. I think I'll just save my money and dive the reefs of Florida.

Went there yesterday, WOW huge Crappies!
First time to Red Lake, even though Im from Bemidji, I hadnt had the chance to get there till yesterday. Arrived about 330, fished till 830. Alot of Fish on the screen, slow bite. Wish I would have brought some waxies maybe that woulda worked. But WOW, very nice Crappies. Im sure these are avg. for the lake, but they were the biggest Crappies Ive caught. All were between 12"-13". Very Nice, might head up today again :)

is the ice now? We're still fishin out of the boat. It is getting a little cool though, water temp. is 44°-45° on the non-power plant lakes. Caught some nice catfish last weekend but struck out this weekend.
Won't be long and the sandbass will be moving into the creeks for the spawn. They are heading that way down around Houston from what I'm told.
Good luck!!! Keep that boy fishin!

Take along some mousies too. Better than waxies. Tiny jighead, very light line. Tease em very slowly. But crappies that big should also love crappie minnows.
Nice fish, you'll get some good fillets out of them.
No wonder you haven't been posting on the intake frosting problem. I don't think Robo believes that they just frost up from air, not from exhaust moisture. You have to see it to believe it, right?

John Harrigan: Ice fishing, a sport for the certifiable
HANGING IN the barn is a hand-powered ice auger. Whenever I glance up at it, and the bait bucket and ice-scoop nearby, two words come to mind — "idiot" and "moron" — as the answer to the question "What kind of person would use these implements?"
I'm thinking here of a particularly cold and brutal day when Mike MacDonald and I and a couple of other cretins decided to bore holes through the ice on Third Connecticut Lake in a Force Four gale at 25 below. Even the dog knew it was stupid, and dug a hole behind a snowdrift and refused to come out.
Mike is one of those guys who is always optimistic and enthusiastic about everything. You could tell him, as he stood there boring a hole through 4 feet of ice, that a gigantic freshwater moray eel could lunge at him from the depths, and he'd answer "Ha-ha" and keep on drilling.
Mike would laugh cheerfully if he was being blown across the lake by a gust of wind from the Beaufort Sea.
When I succumbed to the insanity of ice fishing at age 12 or so, we snowshoed 5 miles into Big Diamond Pond to hole up in a camp with Ben Lay and a motley assortment of other insane people.
"Oh boy!" exulted Ben, or in words to that effect. "Three more people! That means we can have a lot more holes! Yippee!"
This was before the ice-auger was widely available, and "cutting a hole" was a euphemism for standing there for a very long time and pounding away with a sharp blade at the end of a 5-foot pole. You had to start fairly wide, because the hole tended to become an inverted pyramid the further down it went.
An aptitude for math being one of my few gifts, I quickly deduced I would have to catch five fish just to replace the energy spent in creating one hole. It was during this first outing that I learned about ice fishing's rich traditions.
There is, for instance, the "Daffy Duck," which is what you look like when a flag goes up and you try to get traction on the ice so you can sprint over to find nothing but missing bait.
There is the hook through the finger, right there where the bait's dorsal fin was a split-second before.
There is the joy of plunging your hand into ice-cold bait bucket for a minnow.
Of course there is visiting. In our group's case, it involved younger members of the crew being left to tend traps while men trudged from one ice shanty to another "to see how the boys are doing."
These visits seemed to take quite a while, and we noticed when they emerged, our leaders took a bit longer to reach the next shanty, often by an elliptical course.
Thinking about this, on Third Lake that awful day, I saw a flag go up, and we all did splendid Daffy Ducks racing to the hole. There was, of course, no one to appreciate it, because no normal, logical person would be in such a place. The bait was still there, healthy and whole. It had been a wind-flag, the most hated flag of all.
We reacted to this false alarm and utter waste of time and energy the way anyone who's insane enough to fish through the ice would react, which was to point off into the distance and yell, "Hey, how about drilling a hole over there?"

Chad,
I go up to Red Lake roughly 8 times a year. The evening bite is the best, unless you can get directly above the school. Walleyes are suppose to open up there in 2006. I go out of Washkish. Usually stay up there for about $25 a night. I am off to Lake of the Woods this weekend for the walleye. Staying right on the lake. Bad news is, I found out last night that my trusty ole' Clearwater Classic fish locator may be on the cahoots. I not sure if I am going to go with Vexilar or the Marcum. Ohh, decisions! Plus, let's hook up this summer. I fish Winnie and Lake of the Woods when I am home. I have a 10 day trip planned for Winnie beginning with the opener. I will supply the fishing vessel.
Thanks

Best way to ice fish-
1-Drill two holes in the ice two feet apart with one hole all the way thru the ice and the second one half way thru the ice
2- fill the hole that is half way thru with ice half way up to the top of the hole
3-sprinkle a can of peas between the two holes
4-wait for a fish to come up and take a pea then kick the fish in the ice-hole!!!!!!!!!!!!

Going out of Warroad Marina. The guy is an independant {runs charters in the summer, rents houses in the winter}. Will be on South Buffalo Bay. $150 for 2 nights and 3 days, he buys the bait. 2 coolers of food and 4 coolers of beer. Must maintain the 2-1 ratio.

Mike, it was alot nicer in the fish house :)
Not certain on the weight, I didnt have a scale on me. But thankfully I had the camera and a tape. 36" Is approximatly a 15-17.5 pounder. Biggest fish of my life. Easily. Before this It was a 4 lb Walleye through the ice. I have caught a few 10+ lb salmon in the river out in Washington, but this wasnt the same situation for sure! I had 4 lb test on, going for Crappies. When he hit I has doing something else of course, so I grabbed the line instead of the pole to bring, what I thought was, the small perch in. We had caught about 50 small perch in the last hour, non stop. When I grabbed the line, he took off of course. Luckily I let him run, then grabbed the rod without losing tension. From there it ws a fight. He ran on me probly 25 times, and each time he would go for 3-6 seconds.
The worst part was I had NO IDEA what I had for the first 15-20 minutes. I was worried I would never see it cause of that 4 lb test. When I finally seen it under the ice, I was shocked. Seriously I never thought I was going to get it up the 8" hole. No way could I turn a 3' long fish up that hole with the light line. So I just let him fight.
3 times I got him somewhat started up the hole, the head angled. Then he ran again, I really expected to lose him while this was going on. But finally on the 4th time, he cam e up. The ice was 3' thivk, so when I finally had a chance I went down for him. What a rush. If your not a fisherman you have no idea, this was fun man.
Snapped a few pics, let em go.
I had a buddy take the pictures underwater because I seriously did not think I was going to land it. Got really lucky.
This was at Red Lake, Mn.
