The cost to remove the refrigerant, will be more than you can get for scrap.

Scrap yard won't take them any other way.

Separate the copper and aluminum (if any) from the steel cabinet.

Remove as much rubber, plastic, etc from the copper.

The copper or aluminum will get you some $$ from the scrap yard.

How much depends on the cleanliness of the copper (#1 copper vs #2 copper, etc) and the price per pound, which changes daily.

In June of '07 I took my old 3-ton Trane condenser coil (all aluminum) and copper/aluminum evap coil to the scrap yard and got $65.

That was 4 cases of Yuengling Lager. Outstanding.

Take care.

You have to recover the refrigerant, remove the compressor and have that properly disposed of then spend a few hours cutting apart the unit and seperating it into different piles. Scrap steel is next to nothing, aluminum is hardly anything, pure (clean, no braze joints or mixed with anything else) copper is roughly $2 a pound. I would assume after you get that all done you will get less than 100 for the unit. You will have spent hours, probably all day disassembling and transporting the unit to the recyclers. You have to pay to have the compressor thrown away as hazardous waste.

Not directing this at you, but this is what good hvac companys do to your old units. We don't just throw them in the dump, we actually take them apart and recycle them. We don't make any money doing it, if anything we loose money. It is a part of our price which customers think is too high.
