View Full Version : Trane CVHE Oil Filter Retrofit

Can anyone shed some light on retrofitting the oil filter on a Trane CVHE, Circ. 1984. The chiller has no isolation valves in the oil piping circuit and is using the original type oil filter. Would like to install isolation valves as well as one piece oil filter rather than canister type.

What exactly do you want to know?

The best procedure for isolating the oil circuit to install valves and replace original canister type oil filter with FLR00928.

If you're asking a question like that, I think you're in over your head.

Thanks for the candid response CW. You could be right. I have not had to perform this procedure in the past. I am accustomed to working with CVHE's that utilize the oil valve block rotary valve.

You are better off waiting until the chiller needs some work done and has
the ref. out of it.

There is a plate you can get, where the 928 screws into. pt number escapes me @ the moment, it's on the older style vintage, but newer than what you got. You can either fabricate a bracket to mount in place of the old oil can, or fit the plate right into the supply line. Get back to you on the p/n. got a model & serial # on this machine? Before doing the retro- I'd zero the machine, or like another guy mentioned waiting for a repair that requires refrig. removal.

From your question I assume that you would not have the equipt. to bring the machine up to 0.

On that vintage machine the oil lines should be flare. Just get a couple of flare caps and cap the male fittings(coming out or the reg. and going into the ball brg. orfice) then you can work on the piping at your leasure.

Pick out a vintage machine that has the screw on filter with the bracket that mounts up to the oil tank head and install(I really don't like the ones that just hang out there in the piping)

Be sure on this retrofit that you don't make the mistake that I have seen in the past and get the tap for the oil pres switch on the upstream side of your valve. This could result in running the machine with no oil reaching the bearings.

After the piping is fabricated just take off the caps and hook up the flare nuts(This will be easier if you have someone to hold a finger over the holes for you and a couple of caps and flare plugs.

We are also assuming the chiller does not have an oil cooler. I have put valves around the filter before then relocated the oil pressure switch after the last valve before it goes to the bearing.

You cant be serious with this question????
If you cant figure out how and where to install two valves to isolate an oil filter without screwing up the operation then you are WAY WAY over your head ????????

This forum will be for questions that when read will make you say " You got to be F#@%!?g Kiddin' Me".
Questions like:-
Does an FLR 239 have to be installed in the correct flow direction?
Does a GKT 1909 have an up arrow ?
Does an FLR 1592 have right or left hand thread ?
Get the idea , do you think it will fly ???

Same way you do a top end on a YT. Or check the valves on a scroll.
