Met Aaon Service tech to start 6 Aaon package rtu's. All 6 units have the wrong control chip in them and will have to be replaced. All 6 have leaks on the 1rst stage of the system. All 6 have a 7/8 liquid line and they installed a 3/8 hot gas solenoid valve which takes the units out on high head pressure.and 5 of the units had the communications wiring missing between the boards. Can someone tell me how I could get a job in QC with them? I think my location shouldn't really matter because they don't look at the units either.
There response is "just job security for me".

I thought they used to have some decent RTU units. Carrier must have bought them out!

LOL That sounds about right.

I don't think CARRIER quality control has gotten that bad yet. At least you don't have to have a factory rep come and start up the equipment on carrier. They feel that we have enough "intelligence" to start it up.

Maybe they have to send a factory rep for startup because we are not trained to fix all of their factory screwups!

We installed 5 identical AAon units on a job,It was a gaurantee that the same thing would break on all units at the same time.Had the same leak in the same fitting on all units,All phase monitors bad within 6 weeks of one another, the list just goes on and on. They finally junked them all and put in a chiller.

I do alot of Aaon warranty repairs and agree that they NEED better quality control.I have never seen other manufacturers units with as many problems out of the box as Aaon has.The stickers they put on the units about quality checks is a joke at best.If you think the package units are bad believe it or not the split systems are even worse.I consistantly find miswired units, incorrect wiring diagrams, leaks{water and ref}Dont know how the stay in buisness.

we just installed 4 190ton units and at first sight they are impressive aluminum diamond tread floors in comp room color coded relays removable core filter driers etc but at startup it was unbeleiveable how many problems there were from missing collars to relays wired wrong to the nasty looking braze joints lol mixed feelings here

I've commissioned my DDC controls with Aaon reps on hand and recently have seen control wiring mistakes, undersized fuses, bad contactors, faulty VFD's, etc,. It all depends upon which Mexican builds your unit! Check out the names of the people who have signed off on quality checks of the equipment. No pun intended. Built in the USA by low cost, low quality labor, what ashame.

At least they are consistant....Many issues with new aaon units here too. Wal Mart has opened several supermarkets in this area, and we started many of them and provided warranty service. Most of what we saw was in the form of mis-wired units. pressure switches hooked up on the wrong circuit, even dead shorts.( they ran this thing?)
I contacted their rep in OK, and he acted like this was nothing new. He didn't mind us charging him for the repairs, but a little more QC would stop this sort of thing.
They do have the right idea, and when these things are right, they have an excellent product. I just hope they dont blow it.

LOL. Yeah, they haven't learned to spell "Exothermic" yet. Those joints all look like Vern Jr. was practicing ith his turbo torch on them.:p

oh ya I forgot the best part one of the electricians on the job was hooking up a sensor for the invensys guy in the unit grabs the lifting lug on the motor to steady himself as he looks over it and it breaks in his hand.......... if that aint bad enough it had been broken before and had glue holding it together imagine changing that motor and hooking the lug on a crane to pull the motor? I'd rather see them send it out with a broken lug than glue it back together

So why does Wallyworld, Target etc. use these AAON units if they are that bad? Though I did notice our brand new Target used Carrier Centurions.

Consistency.
Just about every part in the AAONs can be aftermarket, because they already are, going in.
That, and they're relatively simple to service. They are very user friendly, with their access panels and such.
They are NOT cheap, though, which leads me to say "WHY?" also...

we installed 36 aaon chillwater fancoils which customer purchased themselves also bought extended warranty. every one leaked water. aaon came in and replaced drain pans and a bunch of other stuff after we told them that the were using wrong shives and was moving way to much air. well after 5 yr warranty up customer asked us to look at them and well we are now changing 36 shives. and by the way there is nothing wrong with carrier, when ever asystem has trouble its usually the technition is unable to correctly diagnose and repair the thing or it was installed improperly and service personel for that system is unable to fix it. simple as that.

AAONS biggest problem is small shop trying to fulfill uncle Wally's demands of growth. Their engineering is of quality (IMO) but has suffered on final assembly, test, and inspection.
Don't count them out yet, I'd rather service their package units than some the #$%&@ coming from green and grey.
