1992 vintage Heil 5 ton 115k btu gas pack, (LP converted) the inducer fan/HX and other parts are rusted to pieces and in need of replacement. Parts are fairly expensive for the old unit (yeah now they decide a replacement HX in SS is a good idea) so I am looking at replacing the entire 17 yr old unit with a nice new Dual Fuel unit. I have a quote for a 5 ton Frigidaire Dual Fuel Hybrid package unit with R-410A (DF6SF) 4 stage heat/2 stage cool with the variable speed blower HW8000 tstat w/outdoor sensor and of course LP conversion kit. It looks like a sweet unit and I like the price but I am a bit unfamiliar with the Frigidaire brand. I understand that this is actually a Nordyne product, now whether it being a Nordyne product is a good or bad thing I just am not sure? Apparently this is a 15 SEER unit and will qualify for the 30% Federal Tax Credit (the 5 ton version was just tested and approved). By my calcs that will get me a premium unit for basically the same cost as a midgrade unit. Manual J does call for a 5 ton unit and the duct is sized properly so the basics are covered. It is starting to get cool weather in middle TN so I need to make a move here in the next few days to get something ordered, whether it be the Frigidaire or something else. The Dual Fuel is a interesting concept to me, it would seem to be the ideal flexible solution for the heat source. My Propane costs have been very expensive with the old unit. TVA still has pretty reasonable electric rates so I think this will work well for me. I welcome all comments. Thanks. http://hvac-talk.com/vbb/images/icons/icon7.gif

The 8000 series stat can't control both stages of gas back up heat. So the second stage of gas aux will use the furnace timer.

If you ask them to upgrade you to the IAQ(YTH9421) it can control both stages of gas aux heat. And give you the comfort your paying for.

Excellent I will ask for that 9000 series HW. What about the Frigidaire Brand? Is it as advertised or is is this a big step back from Trane/Carrier etc.

Its a good brand.
Nordyne has good tech support. Atleast here they do.

News today from my HVAC guy. He says the 5 ton hybrid dual fuel Nordyne (Frigdaire DF6FS) that he had quoted is NOT in production yet and he cannot get a unit for 3 to 4 weeks even if then. Can someone confirm that these units are actually unavailable? You know the old saying "Trust But Verify" well I am Verifying here from what I have been told is a panel of absolute experts, let me know.

And if you get the version with the remote EIM (equipment interface module) for just a few dollars more you might save rewiring from the old tstat to the furnace by using the old wires.
