May I ask your advice. I live in the NYC metropolitan area and am interested in any recommendation to get a good HVAC education. Since I have already have an associates degree, I would be looking for a tech school.
Also, some schools just teach refrigeration and others are HVAC. Is there a difference or preference when you apply for work.
I need to change careers and I have a family to support. I have saved some money to make this transition, so this is an important decision in my life.

One possibility is to find a 2-yr. community college with an HVAC "certificate" program (versus degree program only) and just take the HVAC classes to earn the certificate. You could take classes at night and work in the day time to support your family. A certificate program would typically have about 10 classes. It's even better, learning-wise, if your day job is in HVAC as a helper, apprentice, or whatever.

Here's just one example of a certificate curriculum (at City Tech):

Thanks for your response to my request. I have followed your advice and looked at the curriculum of the school. It would be an ideal solution if I could afford to spend the two years in school, but I am looking to work full time in within the year and I think a certified HVAC or Refrigeration school concentrated
in the field would serve me better.
Do you have any advice as to HVAC and concentrating on just Refrigeration. Would I be better served concentrating on one or the other.

I think the best edu is trial and error. Get in there and try your best, if you don't know something be honest. A good tech will take the time to teach what you don't know. School are good but lack the real hands on

Hi All,

Please advise me, I am Mech Engg with many years of exp. I worked in Qatar and Dubai as HVAC Engineer (Projects). I was living in UK for past 3 years worked for few clients as Software Engineer. Now there are no jobs in IT at all due to credit crisis.
I would like to work again as HVAC Engineer. Please advise me should I take a formal training in UK to work? Or am I straight away eligible for work?
Your input appreciated.

Thanks and Regards in Advance
