Hi, I just noticed that my outdoor unit is making a louder than what I believe is normal clunking noise when it shuts off.

Is this cause for concern? The (Carrier) unit it slightly over 1 year old and otherwise, works fine . . .

Thanks!

I would call a pro on this one, there may be problems with the compressor that if caught in time could save it

The tech came out and said everything was fine. Explained that is was the pressure equalizing instantly (something like that).

did he make sure the fan blade set screw was tight

sure it wasn't the duct work you were hearing making the noise from expanding and contracting form the heat and cool air? When the heat kicks in the duct works expands, and shortly after the heat turns off the duct work will contract.

Yes, I am sure. It was/is clearly a noise coming from the outside unit.

Has to be the line sets coming into the house then, check the lines when the OD unit is running and also check the line inside

Is this a heat pump?

The lines going into the house or out . . . What is the difference? The sounds is heard when standing outside next to the unit and comes from within.

It is not a continuous noise - The compressor is just making a "louder than I remember" noise as soon as it shuts down.

What kind of compressor does it have? If it has a scroll it could be turning backwards untill pressure equalises.

I've not a clue. Whatever comes stock new in Carrier Performance series units.
