Just bought a home which has a roof mounted heat pump in Phoenix AZ - 5-ton system for a 2K sq. foot home.

After doing some research on the forum it looks like the return/filter is probably sized too small - 20x30 opening - of that space, 6x30 only has about 2.5" clearance before being obstructed (14x30 is totally clear from the grille straight up the duct to the heat pump - which is about 36" up)

Got pushback from the installer when I brought this up and inquired about changing the return grille to a 2-inch or possibly pursuing other remediation (they said to just use a pleated filter which cost less than $5). Going to find a new company, but would like to have some knowledge so I know what to expect.

Would it be a good idea to have someone change the filter grille assembly to accomodate a 2-inch filter? This will fit in the space, but the 'obstructed' area referenced above would then have about 0.5" of clearance.

Was planning to replace the grille assembly regardless because the current is old and sagging - was going specify a Dayus 'cube core' or similar to minimize restriction and noise.

Do I need to consider more drastic remediation - enlarging the return ductwork or something else?

Thank you very much!!!

Have your new company check the static pressure. To see if a 2" can be used.
And or if you need to improve your return duct system.
