I have two similar quotes for installation of new system in my home. These are replacing a 22 year old system and they are from excellent companies.
System 1 choice: York 2 ton two stage Affinity (YZH02411)heat pump with 3 ton variable speed air handler with 10KW heater w/breaker 16.65 seer 9.6 hspf with lifetime compressor and 10yr parts and labor warranties.
System 2 choice: Trane 2 ton , XL20i, 19 seer heat pump with 2-stage variable air handler unit. 12 yr compressor, 10 yr parts and labor.
Any suggestions?

I prefer the York.

For a tie-breaker ask an HVAC supply house for the price of a control board for each.
The variable speed drive with motor is another budget buster.

So what happens if they are the same price.
With ten year parts and labor warranty. That won't help much. As the opposite one could become more expensive.

Then I'd say it's price-fixing and you should call out the Feds.

Besides picking the quieter unit and getting more bids, how do you suggest, in general, "HVAC ties" be resolved?
Perhaps if you, or others, said why y'all prefer the York or the Trane or the whatever, the OP would have more insight into making the correct decision for himself/herself.

Manufacturer/distributor support of product.
Tech/engineering support.
Don't care if replacement parts are free. Doesn't do a bit of good, if they don't stock them. And are on back order for 6 months.
A dealers service after the sale, is no better then the support after the sale he receives from the manufacturer/distributor.
Jrbenny has/had a link in his sig, on how to chose a contractor.
That is a good way.
Price is not a selection method, that gets the customer any benefit. Other then poor service after the sale.

A few more keywords will narrow the search
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=safari&rls=en-us&as_q=support+engineering+stock+backorder&as_epq=&as_oq=trane+york&as_eq=&num=10&lr=&as_filetype=&ft=i&as_sitesearch=&as_qdr=all&as_rights=&as_occt=any&cr=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&safe=off
This wouldn't hurt

either.

My choice is for the York system, but then again I'm bias since I don't handle the Trane line. I know in the Philadelphia area that the York distributors are pretty good with working with their dealer contractors, as per sales and service info. I know that Trane is a very good brand but not sure if paying extra just for the Trane brand is worth it or not.
Remember, it comes down to the contractor who is installing the new system.
Hpefully, that person will install it correctly and you will never have a problem.
Good luck!

Some say the York units are noisy...... fact or fiction?

Some units are.
The Affinity is not.

Actually the Trane estimate was a bit lower. Are these two units comparable? I keep hearing that Trane is a bit more costly, but...
The only difference in the warranties is the compressor, lifetime vs 12 yr.
Thanks for the input thus far. All of your comments have been helpful.

Yes, they are comparable units.
Both are the brands top of the line.

You might spend more time learning about the companies that quoted. (I read you said both are excellent but?) Ask to see a new installation and go talk to the home owner. That's going to be the Biggest difference! I'm more partial to Trane but I've spent more time on them.
