I just installed a xl16i heat pump and xl900 stat with variable speed furnace. All communicating modles. I work on mostly large commercial hvac systems and don,t have much experience on the residential. This my home system that I installed. Seems to work well. I was wondering if there is a way to tell which stage cooling is running. It just says cooling on. How does the xl900 stage the cooling, as there is a 2 stage compressor in the heat pump.

I don't know of a way to tell if high is on with those controls.
Staging is a combination of time, temp & logic. The more and faster the temp drops/rises, the sooner the 2nd stage comes on. If the stat thinks that 1st stage is enough, it will stay there. If signs point to needing help, it will upstage.

I'm still fairly new at this hvac stuff but I can tell that I've noticed the guys with many years of experience tend not to read the instructions that come with the new equipment and I've made them look not so experienced simply by reading. Put the instructions near the toilet if you have to. You may find some silly little switch needs to be flipped on the control board to even enable 2nd stage etc... .

A communicating system basically sets it up. each unit has its own identifier chip that the circuit board reads and makes all the settings, providing no one has changed the setting in the 900 stat, most of the setting should be set to "E" to auto detect.
also did you take advantage of the charge assist feature on the condensor. And did you set the dip switches on the condensor for the correct linest lenght.
If you have done all things correctly the unit does as is needed, First stage compressor runs @ 80% and brings the fan speed to 80% as well, then if it can't keep up second stage will energize and bring the comressorto 100% and the variablespeed fan will also bump to 100%, thes speeds are timed so not always will you have the same volume of air through the vents, but when the unit runs @ 100% there will be no question you'll know it, there will be alot more air flow.

Thanks for your responses. It would be nice if the stat told you what stage it is in though.

Looking at the stat and knowing what stage is running would make to much sense, we can't have that!

If you had a good tech. There is a way on the 900, and the IAQ.
Can't tell you in the resi forum though.

even if it told you what stage was running, you would find something else to whine about
.
