I am well paid.

I am treated as a person rather than a machine or a peg on a board.

Did I mention that I was well paid?

I have been challenged as my skills have increased.

Did I mention that I was well paid?

Note, Old Fart edited his post for spelling errors. That's a hint. Spell check is my friend. That being said, think through your business plan and what type of company YOU want to be, not what type of company you want to own, ultimately you are what you will be selling. Treat your customers and employees as you would want to be treated and you won't need any more input from me on that subject

A fast service van and shiny new tools...j/k

The opportunity to grow and to be compensated for hard work. We had a tech here once that thought he should be compensated first in order to encourage him to work harder...last time we saw him was in a different company's work van sleeping in a parking lot. Good Riddance. :cliff:

I think people stay where they are because they are being treated and paid fairly.
They are content with their job, the security and challenges it offers and are appreciated.
Trying and succeding in treating people (employees, and customers) as you would like to
be treated is one of the keys to a successful business.

that said... I know several tech that stay ..because no one else will hire them,
because they have limited skills and no ambition to educate themselves..and sadly
several others who work for a real miser who pays them little, works them hard, provides no education or health benifits and loans them money for dr and dentist visits that these
guys have no way of repaying other than continuing to work for this ...guy.
this is the guy I know who calls people who educate themselves 'college educated idiots'..even if they aren't college educated..just know more than he does.
his method of hvac work, emplyoee skills and people skills are then standard I
use as what I would never ever want to be.
sizes units on what the bank balance,or credit range the customer can meet..sad sad way..imo...to do business.

I'm a firm believer of treating people the way you would want to be treated.
(cause what comes around..goes around..and that ain't no lie!)

best of luck with your endevors.

Let's turn the question around. What would make you want to stay at a company and what would make you want to quit? Hopefully you've been in the field awhile if you're planning on starting up your own company, so what made you leave or stay at wherever you worked.

I like working for other people. I just have to show up and do my thing. No headaches. That might be different, however, if residential was my primary source of income.
