Air returns

Hello,
Thanks to all those who provide wonderful information.

I received three estimates for replacement of a heat pump. Only one mentioned the need for an additional return. The home was built in 1999 and it has two returns in the hallway and he suggested adding another one because the house should have more returns when it was built.

I asked the other contractor whether an additional air return was needed and he said no. So I'm confused. I am not changing the size of the system, just replacing the current 5 ton unit.

Most systems have undersized duct work/air distribution systems.
So real good chance, that you need more return.

If you want more definitive answers, post the size of the current returns and the equipment the contractors are suggesting. Also their location, the configuration of your home and your location.
