Hey guys just wanted to throw this one out there. I put lip seal by passes on a & b compressors,on circuit 1. I started to fill with nitrogen for a 3 time evacuation but kept losing pressure , looked and looked with soap bubbles, honestly I was getting ready to punt, finally found the leak, my question to you all (where was it?) Hint: It was not in any fittings . Tim

Tube sheet? Compressor casting?

The most frustrated I've been yet with a leak repair was an EXV on an RTAA leaking at the electrical connections.............at the terminal board midway on the machine!!

At the electrical terminal on the motor, 6 studs coming out of motor, all where loose, tightened ,problem leak gone. I think I also age a few years in the process. Tim
always looking

That is the most common and first place to look on a RTAA. You don't want to just tighten them you want to rework them with the new insulator and o-ring design. If you megged the motor it would probably meg low due to rust under those original insulators.

If the insulators are square then you should replace with the new style rounded ones . They shed the condensation better and prevent the corrosion between the insulator and the terminal plate and the leaks that go with that corrosion.

Thanks , I very much wecolme the input. These units are only 11 years old ,do all the chillers you guys work on have as many problems and need as much updating as these rtaa-300 and what is your honest opinion of them ? And Who makes the best chiller ? Thanks Tim

Well it looks like I will be back at it.

Trane still makes the best chiller Tim. We have outstanding products. Any rotary compressor is going to have the same issues whether it is made by trane or not. Its mechanical and things break. Yes it is hard to stop a trane. Not impossible.

I love working on RTAAs.
I saw one that I'm convinced started leaking at the motor connections because of a problem with the externally supplied 120V circuit. Rather than fix this very simple problem the chiller was turned off at the breaker. There was still flow through the barrel so it didn't freeze but the compressors got stone cold and stayed that way for months (all Winter).

Yea I had one that leaked coz the magma flux capacitor shorted out the induction transfer regulator which blew out the neutron isolation chip circuit breaker which then melted onto the millenium transfer swich , after that all S&%t broke loose and it leaked .!!!!!!!!!!

a little 'formula 409' will clean up the millenium transfer switch...just a little tip from me to you :D

There is a SB on the terminals. We stock the kits just for that reason.

That's only on a Chevy, not a Pontiac!
