Anyone know what the difference is between a Ruud UGRM furnace and a Ruud UGFD furnace? And which one is better?

Also, the contractor is telling me to consider Heil also... I have never heard of Heil... is it as good?

Thanks

Ask the contractor how long it takes to get warranty parts for each unit. In my town, I can get RHEEM/RUUD parts same day. Heil.....uhhh i honestly don't know. I may have to hit the internet to find parts and i would bet it would take a week or more.

i would go with the Rudd. very tough and reliable plus 10 year parts warranty.
the cabinets are strong and all the wiring is set up well, amongst other things...

personally, i the Heil is cheapo garbage, not engineered well. the blower doors suck in air due to bad seal in my experience with them.

if you trust consumer reports at all(not saying you should) Rudd equipment is at the very top of the list as far as part failure where Heil is all the way at the bottom....

UGRM is a 2 stage 95% (except 120K) variable speed furnace. The UGFD is a 13 stage (modulating) furnace with variable speed blower. Unfortunately no sizes get 95% for the tax credit.

Heil is part of International Comfort Products, now owned by United Technologies, parent of Carrier. They are good products too though I'm partial to Rheem. As for parts availability, that varies by area and distributor. We have 1 source for Rheem parts, 4 sources of ICP parts.

Who is at the top of the consumer reports, digest change with each passing year. I have seen janitrol, goodman, heil, carrier, rheem, etc. last 25+ years each. If this servicing dealer is recommending either one it means he has had good luck with each. And if he wasn't able to get repair parts for Heil than why would he push the product. Seems like it would be too much of a headache for him. In my area I have 4+ different distributors for ICP products while only 1 for Rheem/Ruud.

Go with the UGFD... You will be hard pressed to find any dissatisfied folks (unless the installer botched it)

But if the UGFD doesn't reach 95%, it doesn't quality for tax rebate... so what would make the UGFD better than the UGRM?
