Said it's been like this for eight years. Installed new water heater a year or two ago and hooked it up just like the old one was. That vent was that way so he just left it.

I don't think that's what they ment by direct vent. The problem is this kind of work never kills the guy that did it. He must have mis-read the lable as "US CRAPMASTER"

I've seen that a few time on old farm house! Guess they had enough air leaks in the basement, it really didn't matter.. :-(
Also nice work on the water lines!

The heat coming from it I would think would be a fire hazzard that close to the floor, not to mention the obvious dangers.

Yup Farm houses are good for that and coffee cans with the bottoms cut out stuck together to repair/replace rusted out vents!

Just wondering how the garden hose and the shower caddy come in to play. And how much more stuffff can be stored around that draft hood..

it looks like the pipe continued on at one time (see the hanger about a foot to the right of the end of the pipe) my gues is that someone was carying something big through the basement and knocked the pipe down. everything still worked fine without it, so they threw it out. as for why someone connected a new water heater to that, i have no idea :)
and that is some true workmanship on the piping for the T&P valve :)

That's not a garden hose it's Electrical wire. Maybe they used to have and electric water heater. On jobs like this I'm always afraid to ask why.....
