Electrician here, running into these new communicating furnace/heat pumps.
I've wired plenty of off peak systems, which usually involve turning an electric plenum heater on/off depending on utility rates. Gas heats when electric is off, electric heats when the time of day is cheaper electricity, etc.
These systems are all setup to intercept the communication between the t-stat and the furnace, the typical R-G-W-Y-C-W1-Y2 etc.
The new communicating t-stats and systems don't employ this configuration. Are we losing functionality here? Is there a plug in module to bring my good old terminal letters into these new systems?
Right now I have a customer with a brand new Trane setup, furnace heat pump and t-stat TCONT900AC43UA. He's adding electric plenum heat for off-peak heat. Not sure how to proceed, or where I can get more info. The manual for the t-stat is useless.
Any guideposts you can send me towards finding more information would be great. I'll be contacting some TRANE customer service numbers tomorrow during business hours...
