View Full Version : Does condenser power consumption vary while running?

I'm curious to know if the power draw of a scroll compressor condensing unit varies (i.e. Lennox 10ACC−030−230−01) durning its running state.

I know that it will draw more power at start up; I'm talking about the power draw during its running state. Note I'm also not talking about system efficiency, I know that can vary.

Actually, I suspect the power draw does vary while its running, but I don't know what variables (ambient temperature, refrigerent pressure, etc) might affect the power consumption. If the energy use does vary, what percentages might it vary? Would it be only theorectically measureable, like 1%? or could it be significant, like 40%?

As a related question: I think my unit draws about 3kw. Can someone check my math?

Compressor draw 12.9amps + condenser fan motor 1.1amps = 14amps.

14amps * 220volts = 3080watts

Condenser power draw varies with the outdoor temp and humidity (load) as well as the indoor temp and humidity.

Sample tech data for my 3 ton Goodman heat pump (at 1200 CFM):

Outdoor------Indoor--------Indoor--------Total System
Ambient------Dry Bulb------Wet Bulb------Power

95F----------70F-------------67F----------2.91 kw
95F----------70F-------------59F----------2.76
95F----------85F-------------67F----------2.98
95F----------85F-------------59F----------2.83

75F----------70F-------------67F----------2.61
75F----------70F-------------59F----------2.49
75F----------85F-------------67F----------2.67
75F----------85F-------------59F----------2.55

Take care.

SHO, your amp listing, looks like the data plate ratings.

It may never draw those amps.
