I have a 10 year old American Standard UD080C936H single stage gas upflow furnace in Dayton Ohio. I want to add a new 15 SEER/12.5 EER/8.5 HSPF 2.5t heatpump in order to have a hybrid system to replace my failing 2.5t AC.

The furnace is in good working order and uses a White Rogers 50A50-473 control. Instead of changing out a good furnace for many dollars, is it possible to installto a new ECM motor motor and add a new controller and thermostat(whether the Honeywell IAQ, White Rogers 1291 TStat and something like the W/R 50A51 control?). This would give me backup gas heating for temperatures under 32 degrees at a fraction of the cost.

I have and idea of the hardware cost and could afford an upgrade but not a furnace replacement on top of the cost for an new AC/Heatpump. The furnace is currently rated for 3t airflow and would include the appropriate larger evaporator.
