View Full Version : Spacepak shutting down condenser--icing??

Working on a house with a 3.5 ton Spacepak air handler in the attic and a 3.5 ton condenser. After about 2 hours, the outside condenser shuts down. System is charged with R410. Pressure runs at about 415 head pressure and 115 on the suction. Cold air out of the vents is at about 48F.

Total lines: 18. Can add about 5 more. No reducers are installed yet and there is minimal airflow escaping because I have not taped all the seals at the plenum yet. Not sure if this is causing problems.

The return air line is in the center hallway of the house. The return line is about 18 feet from the air handler. No obstructions. Good air suction. Tight connection...all taped up and sealed.

PROBLEM: Seems like the air handler is freezing over and is shutting down the condenser.

So I removed the return air line at the air handler and the system works normally...no shutting down. Ran it for 4 hours and it never stopped the condenser.

So it appears that the air handler is not getting enough air from the return line and is causing it to ice over and activating the anti-icing switch.

What would be the best way to increase the airflow into the air handler?

I was thinking of cutting into the existing air return line and adding another return air vent and line from another room so the air handler can pull more air from the home.

Or perhaps adding an inline duct fan inside the return air line that comes on when the unit starts up to incresase the CFM and air suction into the air handler?

ANy ideas???
