Commercial Refrigerated Salad Bar..... The power top on the Sporlan TXV (TEV) was leaking. I replaced the power top and evacuated and recharged the unit. My partener insists that I should have replace the entire expansion valve assembly to forgo problems in the future. I haven’t worked in refrigeration for quite a few years until just recently but as I remember it the Sporlan TXV pretty much doesn’t wear out but the power tops do go bad from time to time so in this case I don’t think that replacement of the entire valve assembly is needed. It is a hell of a lot easier to just replace the top.

In your opinion which is more correct? Replace power top or the entire valve assembly?

Last thing I want to do is change the TXV if I get get away with a power element. You did the right thing IMO.

agreed, sporlan valves are pretty darn reliable, imo. I would have just changed the power element as well.

I replace powerheads all the time.

It is a lot easier than pumping down, burning a new valve in, evacuating, restarting...

That's why we designed the TEVs with replaceable elements in the first place... ;)

If we really did not want you to replace the element, we would have designed the TEVs with a fixed element. :D
