Hi ! This board seems very knowledgeable and I need your help on a residential A/C question that I have.

I have 2 friends that claim to know AC but haven't been able to put their finger on the problem yet.

I have a goodman cpkj42-18 heat pump unit. I started having the problem of the outside condenser fan turning off about 20 minutes after I turned on the air. The blower in the attic then started blowing horribly hot air through the house, like the heat was on. This happened over and over without being able to run the unit 20 or 30 minutes without the outside condenser fan motor stopping. Every 20 minutes after the outside condenser fan stopped I would then have to kill the breaker switches to prevent hot air from blowing through the house. I was told to replace the condenser fan motor and capacitor. I did both a few days ago and then had the same exact problem.

I then told an ex ac friend what happened. They figured out that by removing the purple condenser fan motor wire from the defrost board and plugging it into somewhere else(forget the name of the terminal), it would make the condenser fan stay on. So basically we bypassed the defrost board and the fan motor stayed on until a/c unit shut off. I was so excited, but guess what. After 30 minutes the air went from 54 inside up to the high 80's within just minutes. The fan motor was still on ! I then ended up flipping off one of my 2 heat circuit breakers and this stopped the hot heat from blowing. So the a/c breaker is still on. Another breaker labeled heat is still on...the one that makes the air blow in the attic. But one heat breaker is flipped off...the one that stopped the hot air within 20 secs of flipping it off.

If I leave the purple fan motor wire where it is bypassing the defrost board the condenser fan stays on more than 20 minutes.

If I leave the one heat breaker off, the extremely hot air doesn't start to blow after about 20 to 30 minutes of turning on.

Also adding my friend told me a few days ago that the thermostat was calling for heat when it was set for ac and auto. I just replaced that 2 hours ago and then flipped my heat breaker back on. House cooled down nicely but after 30 minutes my boy was watching the digital thermometer I have in the vent. It went from 55 to 80 within a couple minutes. I sure hope one of you guys can help me. Now that I have basically eliminated my thermostat, condensor fan, capacitor, and am bypassing my defrost board to keep my condenser fan motor running. What all is left ????? I also need to add, that when I flip my thermostat to off and leave it on auto, my outside condenser fan turns off, but sometimes my blower motor in the attic sometimes will run an additional 10 minutes before turning off even though the thermostat is on off/auto. Hope this info gives you pros enough info to shoot down this problem. I will be very thankful to any help I can get.

YOUneed to call A service tech to fix your problem

Sorry, I guess i misunderstood the rules. It seemed to me, you didnt want people to be asking for step by step instructions. I am asking for ZERO instructions. I was asking a question about what could be causing my problem. If you read my post, you will see I have narrowed it down to several things and do not want to be misled or be ripped off again. I was hoping that someone here had the knowledge to tell me what part/parts that my problem could pertain to and that I need to get fixed, so a tech, etc doesn't rip me off.

Sorry...I have read many other posts where people get their questions answered on what is wrong. Why not me ????? I am not asking for instructions (DIY) on how to fix it. I am just wanting to know what may be wrong. I am sure there are techs that can answer my question within a couple minutes and make me a very happy person.

You still want to Do It Yourself. That is DIY.

Step by step instructions:
1 look up a service co in the phone book.
2 dial their number
3 tell them it is broke and it needs to be fixed, please send a tech.
4 pay them.

I understood your post ------------

your 2 friends don't have a clue how to troubleshoot............

so telling you what the problem is, is DIY

i can claim to know many things, but there are days I can't recall my own name

Generally, when someone says they already replaced this that and the other thing, what else is left.
They also intend to change out any other part they're told could be causing the problem also.

A service tech could have repaired it by now.
