I live in a mobile home that is 900 square feet. My outside unit and inside coil have gone out and the A/C man the manager sent over reported to her that I need at least a 2 1/2 ton to 3 ton unit. They have offered to replace these 2 items but no new fan motor, squirrel cage and I am concerned the hearter unit will not be compatable either. Also the ductwork is set up for the 1 1/2 tons I currently have.

I have an Intertherm now and they want to go with a Lennox 2 1/2-3 thinking it will cool so much better, quicker and save me a lot of money. Doesn't the lines and wiring also have to be redone? I am concerned and need to know soon so I can have some air. We are in a heat wave right now and it was 98 today!

Oh and it would be from a 10 seer to 13 seer also.

Thanks

Get another contractor to give you an estimate.

If your current 1.5 ton was able to keep your place cool.
No reason to increase by 1 ton.

It will cost you more.

Actually last year I did have a contractor come out about replacing the unit with a higher seer rating and a higher tonnage. He said I could not go much more above what I have now because the ductwork may not be compatable and if I went with anything other then what I have now I would need a whole complete unit, heat and all and the unit would have to fit in the existing closet area.

I am on disability and the managers and owners here have offered to instal the above for me and finance it as I am on a limited income. I told them what the other contractor told me but the a/c certified man here is contradicitng on some of what I was told.

Ask them to put it in writing that your cooling bill will come down.
Or they will replace it with a new 1.5 ton unit.

Call other contractors, and see if thay have same as cash financing available.

Did your old 1.5 ton unit keep the place cool? Or did it not keep the inside temps down in hot weather?

It was not good enough to cool and barely blew out any air. I have only had this home for 2 years and the unit is 10 years old. About the life expentancy of where I live in Corpus Christi.

The cost is not much more than the cost of more tonnage and I obviously would like to have better if possible. They are also not charging me to install it so it is saving me to have them do it.

I guess what I basically need to know you would go to a higher tonnage and seer without changing out the motor and squirrel cage, heater unit, wires or freon lines. I always thought that the size of the fan motor squirrel cage determines how hard the air flows out of the vents. The a/c guy says if he puts a larger outside unit and inside coil it will blow better and going up in seer will save me money.

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate it as I don't want to have issues if he is wrong and end up needing more down the line.

I did apply for financing but since I am on a limited income, disabilty, my credit was good but not enough income. That is why they are trying to help me here. Most of the same size mobile homes have 2 - 2 1/2 tons while mine is the 1 1/2 and they told me they have never seen one the size of my mobile home with such a small a/c. I will more than likdley tell them I will go to 2 ton as I know the ductwork will be ok with that size unit.
