This always happens on saturday after the supply house closes.
Beer Cooler, walk in, 38F design temp
KATA-015E-800-TAC (medium temp r-22)? All data says its R12!!
Been running a year.
New expansion Valve EGVE 1-1\2 sweat
Sporlan distributor with 1\4 stamped on the nozzle(4 tubes) .024 tons?!!
Compressor RLA 5amps Pulling 10-11 amps with clear sight glass
Pulled head, no visible damage. Oil level correct and churning in the sight glass
approx 48\250 psig
Comp superheat 15-22
subcool 8-12
Right on ythe comp tag is 22 stamped
you'd figure this is an r-22 comp?
My question is all data mentions 12,134,404etc, no r-22
Assuming it isnt an r-22, will incorrect refrigerant cause the excessive amps alone?
The pattern is extreme Hunting by the TEV
sight glass full, superheat @ 15 then the glass will empty out, superheat tanks high, subcool will go from 10(full glass) down to 0 flashing.
This sequence will happen every 3 or 4 min
How I have near normal SH with what I believe to be an undersized orifice is beyond me.
Compressor overheats and cycles off every 30 min or so.
Its been awhile for me guys, what are your thoughts.
Compressor is still in warranty
Im looking at replaceing
Compressor(proper type)
New nozzle
new TEV, data says this comp 11,000 and some change with a 20F coil
Tell me Im crazy!
Thanks

The KATA-015E-TAC is rated for R12 Medium Temp operation. (Alternate refrigerants are R134A MTand R404A/R507A LT.)

Running it on R22 will cause high motor amp draw just as you have experienced. I suggest going with R134A on this one and changing the TEV to a 1-ton R134A valve with a C-Charge.

toptech,

I'm thinking the 22 stamp you see on the name tag is for the initial oil charge, which is 22 oz for this model.

Your exactly right.
I got another compressor and converted to 134a
Started up today, and all is well.
Thanks to icemeister for your input as well

Maybe all you needed to do was to downsize the txv..

GVE.....need a GFE1C and charge the system with Hotshot, not 134A...stuff doesn't work as well. 409A is OK, but higher head pressure, which I don't like......and actually, but you would have to verify this.....change the power head and that may give you a 3/4 ton valve and may be just enough for your load...but I would change the TXV if it were me.....but the power head would be quicker to verify your suspicions...good luck

Ran the numbers thru my sporlan bible this weekend.
I need to change the nozzle from 1\4 up to 1\2.
Once this box hits 38F i began to freeze on the distributor tubes.
Superheat never goes lower than 25.

I really think 134a will befine.
I installed an SQE with a #4 cartride and a 134a power head.
To top it off i gotta a rouge employee that is turning off the fan at night when doing the cooler stuff!!
I like to here from some 134a fans porfavor
Gracias
