Guys I got out of school a couple of years ago and have been working maintenance at a plant since then. While I was in school we didnt cover much on TXV systems. I was looking at my moms unit that has been freezing up usually about 15 minutes after turning on. Put my gauges on it and checked superheat and had about 7 degrees at outside unit. Checked subcooling and had about 10 degrees at condenser. It was 85 degrees here today and only had 55 psi on suction and about 160 psi on discharge, inside house was 75. Checked blower and it was running fine on inside unit. Could the TXV valve be faulty on it? Really dont have alot of experience with them all we worked on was fixed orifice units in school. Anyone have some pointers?

With that said.
Think what could cause a fix metering device to freeze up with those same readings.
Think what didn't you check, that is important to both TXV and fixed metering device systems.

As a flunky homeowner, I would check the indoor coil for cleanliness, and change the filter. If it's a highly restrictive filter, I would drop down to a less restrictive filter.

Filter is perfect and the indoor coil is very clean. I am going to get my post count up so I can join the pro forum. Really interested in the educational stuff. I have Refrigeration and Air conditioning technology and Heating and Cooling essential books from school but love learning more.

Could it be valve hunting?

It is a goodman unit so I have heard about them having crappy txv valves. Unit isnt but a little over a year old. Going to do a little more studying on it because both parents are in the hospital right now so I have a few days to get it right before they get home. I am going to double check the indoor fan because it acts like a low load situation.
