Well, the wife and I bit the bullet and went with a whole new system, which is being installed tomorrow. We went with a Trane xl15i and a XV95 furnace as well as the clean effects and a humidifier. The installer said they are putting in an 800 series thermostat, my question after reading around here is will I be better off going with an IAQ?

IMO...the 8000 will be fine but the IAQ is worth the upgrade...

Will the trane thermostat be able to control the Variable speed fan for humidty control?

No. Not the 800 series.

If it is dual fuel, by all means IAQ. For straight cool, then if you want the IAQ to control a humidifier or the dehumidify function, it would be nice.

Congratulations! You have the same basic system that I purchased last year (except for the Clean effects). I went with the TC803 Tstat. Make sure it is wired correctly. If It is difficult to have 6 wires going through the wall to the Tstat, then I would go with the IAQ where 3 wires to the tstat will be fine. Check your model numbers carefully of the equipment you are purchasing. I was under the impression I was buying a Trane E-Coil also but it turned out to be an ADP e-coil. (At least it was properly matched though). Also my e-coil is 1 ton larger I'm told for better efficiency. (My AC is 4 ton and the indoor e-coil is 5 ton).
Good Luck
P.S. When I purchased my system I did not know of the existence of the IAQ and had no understanding of HVAC whatsoever. If I could do it all over I'd likely go with the IAQ for better control although I have no issues with humidity in my home because I run on reduced blower speed all the time due to ESP issues. A nice side effect of slower blower speed is reduced humidity.

I think the one he was talking about using is a trane 803. Would I still be better off with the IAQ or will the 803 be able to control the humidifier and variable speed fan correctly?

The 803 can't control the blower.
It can over cool to dehumidify though.

So none of the trane ones will control the blower? I need to figure out what to tell him to get the correct one.
