View Full Version : Any problems with this Trane configuration?

I just installed a 15i 3.5 ton with a 5 ton F65B set at 3.5 tons. The owner of a local ac installer recommended it, and I've seen some posts saying this is ok. Any thoughts?

Did the owner of a local A/C install, show you the ARI rating for that match.

Sorry, its actually AHRI rating now.

If it doesn't have one, then its not a matched system.

Since baldie says it has one, your set.

Why is your installer using a 5-ton air handler matched with a 3.5 ton condensing unit? I don't see the reason, especially since he is setting the dip switches for air flow at 3.5 tons. Why not just match a 3.5 ton air handler with it? Perhaps you have a lot of static pressure in your duct system and need the extra hp from the 5-ton air handler?

I believe on VS blowers, Trane only offers a 3 Ton and 5 Ton blower size like they do with their furnaces, but different coils are used the get the other capacities.

The 5 Ton air handler has larger dimensions, and therefore, in most cases will have lower static pressures across the coil, resulting in lower power consumption... and therefore higher efficiency ratings. The only disadvantage is that a 5 Ton coil may not dehumidify as well. But uses dehmidify on demand by reducing the airflow, should offset that.

Ultimately, if you do a AHRI search, that is the ONLY 3.5 Ton XL15i match with an air handler that qualifies. There are 2 furnace matches that also qualify in that size. They too are using 5 Ton blowers and 5 Ton coils.

That's why Carrier uses numbers on their VS air handlers and Trane will soon do that on coils and air handlers!

They should all probably do that.

Too many people/techs get hung up on that suppose coil BTU rating.
