I just had a 3.5 ton Trane 15i installed with a 5 ton 4TEE3F65B Trane air handler (dip switched to operate at 3.5 tons.)

The air handler is only about an hour or two old and already it is condensing some water along a seam. It also has some noticeable air leakage, particularly along the seam where the Perfect Fit filter is located.

The system is supposed to be very air tight and is advertised as such. Is this normal? I mean I can put my hand along a seam and you can hear the difference when my hand blocks the infiltration.

Thanks.

No, it's not normal. Call your contractor and have him come back.

What should be done to correct this?

I think the contractor wants to wrap the unit in duct tape according to one of the installers.

I don't care to spend so much for a new unit only to have it look 12 years old wrapped in duct tape.

What is normally done with defective units?

Found the cause of the air leaks. Trane couldn't be bothered to put the insulation in the channels -- they were just glued to the side of the walls. The whole air handler insulation seems to have been put together by monkeys.

So much for the Trane Air-Tight system. If I knew Trane didn't do quality control on their products, then I never would have one with them. They definitely don't seem to care.

Terrible unit.
