a XL16i heat pump showed up today instead (XT80 gas furnace is backup)
Do I stop the installers and demand a XL15i?

Yes. You don't want a 2-stage heat pump without a variable speed indoor section (not that it can't be done). The XL15i is a better heat pump anyway, so definitely the one you'd want to have.

Somebody at Trane needs a little bit better quality control.
At least when placing the plastic medallion at the top, which says Trane XL16i.
But the model number is the XL15i.
And I'd just like to say...this sucker is HUGE!
Hmmm...wonder if it'll startup on a 10kW standby generator...

Well, that's a rarity, but you're right--shouldn't have happened. Sometimes things can get mixed up in the assembly line. They can get you the right XL15i plastic thing, no problem. Yes they are big, quiet too.

May be its a 16i with a 15i model number accidentally put on it.

I grabbed a yardstick, and it is 50" tall, spec for the 3-ton XL15i.
The 3-ton XL16i is 46" tall, per Trane's website.
The XL20i is 54" tall!

So, I'm looking at standby generators for it.
Any thoughts on Centurion (by Generac) vs. Kohler?
I think the 12kW model should suffice.
Thanks for all the replies!

Either should be fine.

LOL, I was in Tyler over 2 years ago with five other dealers from Arizona meeting with there engineers about various issues we were having. One of them was the miss marking of units, when we went down to the production line we could see why. They have boxes of 14i,15i,16i,19i tags. As they finish there quality control startup and checkout of units the tags are installed. Put your hand in the wrong box and your 19i becomes a 14i.:p

Imagine the level of shock when the customer sees "XB13" on their new XL20i. :D
