Carrier 50YH

I serviced a Carrier 50YH at work the other day and was surprised that Carrier only used a 2 pole contactor for a 3 phase motor allowing one leg to always be hot. I checked the schematic to make sure it was correct and it was. What was the reasoning behind it?
