I got a new American Standard unit a year ago. Soon after installation, the air handler would make a ticking noise apparently coming our of the condenser unit. Called for service and the condenser was replaced after a while. Now the noise is back. Only once a day or every other day. Ticking noise can be felt touching the coper pipe. It is like a very loud watch, and fast like a machine gun. If I switch power off to the unit, noise is still there. It goes away after 2 o 3 minutes no difference if power on or off.
Any ideas? :mad::mad:

Sounds like a check valve problem.

does the sound start before the unit runs, after, during?

Do you hear it outside when the temperature outside starts to warm up and the unit has not run at all. Just pressure equalizing. Be sure your copper pipes are isolated from your structure and properly insulated to absorb that sound.

If you're talking about the condenser (or outdoor unit) it definitely sounds like a check valve (heat pump?).
Technician should check the refrigerant charge.
