Ah crap... we're going to get a safety bulletin next month now about careful driving, and prolly have to install a full roll cage for PPE now huh!

Seriously tho, glad you're ok!

How bad did it tear the stuff up in the back of the van?

Went to hospital yesterday because I declined to go then didn't feel that bad at the time but everyone said to go , so I did yea got a few bruised ribs left side took xrays don't look like anything broken , they seem to be more concerned with developing water in lungs so they want me to take deep breaths at least 10 times a day , and yea I have to go take piss test early tommarow morning , yea next thing they wil want us to wear is neck harness like they do in NASCAR , like I said she wasn't there and then she was there brakes what brakes , prepare for ramming speed. Shelving inside is all torn up from inside steal and front cage is bowed like an arrow , I don't think there fixin this one , and got ticket for careless driving to.:(

i can see forward facing cameras being the next safety device...like Chevy's recorder that is under the driver seat. Another big brother thing but could have saved u a ticket...u are going to need a new hubcap, that one looks cracked.:D Glad to hear u are ok.

Usually when a service van takes a hit 1/2 that hard it's totaled, the shelves will pull the interior structure apart from the exterior sides of the van and they will total it because it costs too much for the interior repairs. Look inside where the shelves mount, see if the structure is torn apart.

That thing looks totaled anyway!

I am in the shop Jalopy for the next few weeks myself. I hit a deer Last Monday on my way in to work early AM. 55 MPH. The damn thing jumped right out in front of me. I had not time to react. The insurance is contemplating total loss as we speak. The Chevy Van smashed in like an accordion. I know they make them to do this now, but my first thoughts were, what a cheaply made van. I hope they make up their mind quick. This POS I am driving sucks.

I had the same type of accident years ago. I had time to think, "their not stopping". Never got my foot off the gas. Van did a 360 and she was pushed about 100' strait forward. Door popped open and the seat belt held me in. Broken ribs, knees blown out, 6 months out of work.

Truck was totaled and the passenger door on the car that hit me was pushed just about into their drivers seat. They medivaced her out in a helicopter.

The seat belt kept me from flying out the door into 50 MPH traffic. It saved my life, it gets buckled up before the truck or vehicle ever moves every time I travel.

It's actually good that the front of the van is that tore up, the more the van crinkles the less energy you absorb. Course, a good cattle guard and maybe you would have just had to pry her car out of your grill lol.

That sucks about the ticket for sure!

BTW, I have a lil something for you to tell your boss... well I'll tell you a story and you can modify it to fit your needs.

I got in a wreck several years ago in a company vehicle, of course had to go take the pee pee test. Came back to the office after and told the boss "I failed the piss test". Where I worked, it wouldn't be a huge surprise, but his eyes got huge and you could tell he was getting mad. Then I said "I missed the cup the 1st time." I had tears rolling down my face from laughin so hard at his reactions. Thankfully he had a good sense of humor!

that has me rolling. I keep imagining william shatner saying it for some reason.

would love to see if the back of your van is any worse now than the ones at the supply houses these days.

They need to find a way to economically add some type of crumple zones on the full size trucks and vans without losing functionality. Glad you weren't hurt and didn't kill the other driver. Full size trucks are like having a brick wall comming at you. Not your fault... just saying.

I'll step off my soap box.

Totaled??? well, ya, looks like some major frame damage... and thsoe air bags are pretty pricey to replace. .

I believe that came from the movie Animal House at the end when they modified that lincoln into some sort of birthday cake that said eat me and then the driver said prepare for ramming speed.

All Ford vans have a crumple zone built into the first 10" of the frame, crawl underneath and look at the frame rail behind the bumper, I am sure Chevys do as well.

Based on the damage to the van, I'm not impressed by the crumple zones, compared to the damage a much lighter car will sustain in a proportionally equal accident. I think they lean heavily on seat belt tensioners to limit peak G forces. I'd rather let the vehicle absorb the damage. But that's just me.

The Smart Car has a similar problem. Very, very rigid to prevent intrusion, with limited crumple zones. It relies on seat belt tensioners too.

I suppose I'm just a fan of minivans over full size vans if you're not towing heavy trailers. Especially when gas prices are back over $3.

ya and i know how much they cost to replace i got into an accident on dec. 22/08 and i had no where to go on ice everything i did would keep the van going forwand, and on top of it it the van is a sprinter. Also did just under $30,000 (cad) worth of damage!, the insurance company just should have written the bloody van off like i said in the first place! took 15 weeks for it to be repaired!

Switch me into another van now I am in a Chevy Express 2500 back at full duty performing all sorts of jobs , just got the accident report back wensday reason why she was stopped was there was a construction barrel that either fell off a truck or something how it got there is a question all I know is she was stopped dead in the road when I was merging into traffic I was more than likely forced to move one more lane over causing me to be directly in her path she was trying to merge out of here lane I didn't she her till it was to late kaboom. I have already spoken to the JCI insurance rep. they will handle any and all litigation including there side and mine she said if I get any letters from anybody to foward them to her direct.

Call a lawyer who works out of the town where you will be going to court. He will get it reduced and you will end up spending a little more now to save thousands in insurance premiums over the next 4 years.

I know, it sucks, but it's Jersey............that's just the way things work here.

Glad you're OK, hope the boss don't jam u up too bad over the truck.

Good thing your okay. Had this exact thing happen to me last year. No speakea da english, no drivers license, no my car man, pulled out in front of me at an intersection. 12k in damages to my svc van. He disappeared, no tickets, traffic cam caught it on tape. destroyed the shelving in the van. Thanks to that little barrier behind the seats or I'd be pressed to space. Just pisses you off to no end that crap like this happens, you're not at fault and the other guy gets away with it, and you're the one jumping through the hoops.
