Varitrac comfort manager

Having issues trying to connect to a varitrac panel. Here's the deal so far.

Bought a 25 pin x 9 pin adapter and a 9 pin male x female cable so i can connect from panel to computer serial port.

Using hyperterminal with the following settings
Bits per second 1200,2400,4800 8 n 1 x on x off

Set for com port #1 Basicly hyperterminal shows connected but nothing shows up on the screen. Tried playing around with settings but no luck.

tried hitting M for menu but no luck

Any help? This is a 1990 vintage panel that works but need to access

Need to have CAPS on, wont respond to lower case. Have you tried that?

yeah i tried caps still a no-go.

Are you using a null-modem cable? I carry a null modem adapter from Radio Shack in my computer bag. Only about $10.
