Does anyone know the pros/cons of the Loytec Lon Protocol Analyzer vs. whatever Echelon makes?

I'm sure sysint will have that

LPA is registered to the NIC and not the PC
You can access any channel in the system remotely (Loytec)
LPA is the only LON protocol analyzer that can analyze an IP852 channel

Not being registered to a single PC is huge for me. At the last company I was at I purchased the Loytec PA over the Echelon PA for that simple reason. At my new company we have the Echelon PA and I have to hit up the guy for his laptop to use it. Honestly, I have not used it yet as it seems he just goes out there and checks it out. So I can't really give comparisons of the two. I can say that with the hassle of borrowing someone else's engineering PC I wish we had the LPA.

Crab, don't tell anyone that you can download the Echelon LMPA for free and use it in the demo mode forever! Yes, it has a few limitations, but still a good tool for checking bandwidth, error rates, filtering, etc. Oh, and it can be run remotely through the RNI. But buy the one from Sys - his kids need new shoes.

You have a PM and when the boss man says we can get a protocol analyzer to share amongst 5 plus guys... well I don't like to give my work laptop up and the demo mode won't let you run it readily run it remotely via RNI. Actually the LPA was bought to diagnose a network that was consistent problems and was put together and setup by someone else. Blamed on vfd noise, other issues in which I argued with as I did an almost exact same setup of a job and did not have the problems. When I went to check it out with the new protocol analyzer I didn't even hook up the protocol analyzer as I found they changed wire types on the FT-10. Factory wired LON in RTU's was not Echelon rated wire so I fixed that, along with changing some timing sequences in the VAV's so they were staggered and the problems went away.

I must now counter with our free LSD tool. However, the protocol analyzer is very nice to have. Honestly, it should be as available as your pocket screwdriver.

Description looks like the LSD tool requires one of your devices to be on the network though? Or am i reading it wrong?

Wrong.
HW Excelon can also analyze IP852 channel.

Since when?
At least from Excelon version 3.05, may-be earlier.
