Heat Recovery Unit

On a job that I am working on, there is a heat recovery unit being controlled by a UNT with an NAE front end. I was able to look at the HRU program using HVACPro and noticed that there are points that were manually put into the program (it is not using a side loop). My question is, how is the heat recovery unit able to work with points that were not created by HVACPro? Is it through the logic connector tool in the NAE?

I would guess that the user defined points are not being used in the control strategy, but are used for monitoring only. I've seen where a HRU is commanded on with a UNT BO. and there might be an AI for monitoring leaving air temp, but the HRU has it's own package controls for defrost, etc.
