Our company generates tickets on a computer at the office, faxes to the site. We fill out by hand and fax/mail back.
Probably not the most efficient system

used the trial offer on the GPS thing on my cellphone...was 1/4 mile off. not much help when driving around an industrial park. If i need an exact location i fire up my lap top find a hotspot leaking from a business and use Google maps. Paper no electronic paperwork...even the quotes and invoices sent out by the office are typed on a typewriter. Boss is very old school

The company I work for now uses a laptop to get the work orders together and has the customer sign the screen when job is done. This allows the office to bill quicker and generate all the reports that they need to see that they are making or losing money and the productivity of any given tech...I think it's pretty neat stuff personally. It's no different than working for a different company and learning how to do the paperwork the way they want to do it. Besides all that we get have access to the internet to help access factories websites and the such.

Electronic, I prefer it that way. Everything is kept track of and their is no doubt on time, inventory, or equipment worked on. I can also search past work history for the whole site or specific equipment. I know who's callback it may be and let them know about it, or others may call me and let me know.

that's awesome, our secretary does everything by typewriter too. I couldn't believe it the first time I saw that. Maps FTW, takes too long typing everything in on a GPS. I'll admit I have one, but it's in the basement somewhere acting as a door stop.
The only thing that is written manuallly is our service tickets on job site. They are then imported to our database when we turn them. Other than that everything else is electronic.

We all have GPS in our vans, use paper invoices and we don't even have a computer at our office. Invoicing is done off site.

last outfit i worked with all techs had tablet pc's everything was electronic virtually "instant billing" they also were moving toward fleet-tracking gps. Theres 2 sides to the coin with the laptop many guys didnt like the idea of being responsible for them in often times unforgiving environments, and prefered the old paper method. The upside was a nice size screen to look up just about anything if you needed to, with the wireless account it came with.
