Hello, anyone have a recommendation for decent anemometer for supermarkets?

Search on Ebay, they come up all the time for less than $100. I was in on 6 we bought for the shop last year, all brand new.

Bought a few on Ebay too, but you take your chances(some may be 50 years old, my guess is the price goes up now ...thanks Mspanky:D). The Testo 410-1 (does not do humidity but who cares) or 410-2(also does humidity but costs more) has replaced the Alnor as my favourite tool for case honeycomb velocity, about 25% the cost of an Alnor Jr. and much more durable. It is the first rotating vane anemometer I have used that will actually work on the low velocity cases. When I use it I will place my finger lightly against the fan while moving to each measuring spot ( typically every 4ft.) release and wait a few seconds for reading, works great for picking out dead fan motors.

Funny. I have been off the tools over 10 years and I still do this. Even when I am grocery shopping. Old habits die hard! :)

Another vote for the Jr here. With the Scoop.

Ms. Icemeister used to complain about me doing all those things in a store too.

I thought I got the final word when I told the her she should know better than to drag me into a supermarket.

Then I found myself doing all the shopping myself. :D

That's funny.

It made me recall the first Alnor Velometer Jr. I ever saw. It was at my father's shop when I was about 10 years old.

That was 50 years ago.

I'm not sure what ever happened to Pop's Alnor. May my older (retired) brother put it up for sale an Ebay.

I'm not sure if you can buy them. I have a few that have just always been around and I have made a few.

Testo 410 has been working good so far.

I was thinking about getting one of those, did you get the one that reads humidity too?

I've been looking at the 410 as well.

The Testo 410-1 is the basic model and the 410-2 has the humidity feature...for about $80 more.

The basic 410-1 does however have the ability to read the wetbulb temperature, so I'm not sure what the real difference is between them.

For case honeycomb velocity checks, I think either model would be great because of the timed average velocity function.

Here's a video by Jim Bergmann with the 410-1:

As an everday supermarket service tool, the Testo 410-1 has worked excellent for me.
Used to swear by the Alnor Jr. ( it is more accurate when 100% calibrated) but fragile and fickle when trying to field adjust. We ended up with several cracked, broken units at our shop, ( if you own one don't loan it out)
Testo has bounced around in my tool pouch for 2 years and keeps on ticking, ( keep AAA batteries on hand though as they will need replacement often....uses 2 AAA)
Compared to a 100% calibrated Alnor I find it reads a bit lower but to me the purpose is to find dead motors and iced up sections of cases not "timed average velocity".??
The small rotating vane will rotate when you walk but you soon learn to wait a few seconds at every 4 feet of case or lightly place finger against the rotating vane as you walk from each 4' section of case in order to get an instant reading. Takes no time to do an entire "Superstore" and find several hours of work.

P.S. I find the larger rotating vane anometers do not work in the supermarket http://www.google.ca/images?rls=com.microsoft:en-us&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1&rlz=1I7ADRA_en&q=rotating+vane+anemometer&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=yHf8TIi7MJGqsAPH0dn3DQ&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=3&ved=0CDUQsAQwAg&biw=1003&bih=539t application...don't waste your money on them
