Went on a call to replace thermostat in 1999.
This is what I found. (Look at date on equipment)
1st furnace is a counter flow & the 2nd is an upflow -
in a duplex.

Check out flue pipe for both furnaces

Direct Death Vent system! Did ya sample anything in those jars, and you do red tag this stuff if they dont want it corrected to CYOA?.

Thats a very nice looking install. Probably a Home Cheapo special. Only thing I see wrong with it is the filter is in backwards. :)

did they have a glazed look on their eyes? was it winter when you went there? was the heat part actually functional; as in not disabled, as in the furnace would fire if set to call for heat?? it looks like the gas cock may be turned on...

not to mention the return, that's funny (ahh, it's close enough...)

SCARY!!!

the occupants AND the installer used up 8 of their 9 lives on this one, huh?

One of our larger advertizing hack's in the area installed new furnace & a/c. Never told tennants that it wasn't finished. That was in 1997 & YES THEY WERE FUNCTIONAL !!!
I came across this as an a/c problem in 1999- made repairs & installed stat that was needed

See before & after pics here

why couldn't Dateline or 20/20 have there hidden camera's there? they would still probably blame the tech for tring to screw the customer somehow!!

Looks like the #1 and #2 manufacturers are both represented here.
Went on a call similar to this one night, people dizzy and lightheaded. It was a DIY special. Had a buddy who could get equipment wholesale.
I went on this call in a big red truck with flashing lights and a big chrome noise maker. Had gas company lock meter off while we were still there.
6 or 7 years later, house blew up and burned. Some people never learn.

Maybe I'm looking at the pictures wrong, but isn't the counterflow an induced draft furnace, and the upflow an atmospheric Catagory I type unit? How can these be connected and vented together? Or am I missing something? What brand/model is that counterflow?

where in the building were these installed?
Was it in a basement or what?

They are in the back of the first floor apt.
It is a laundry/utility room for both apts.

My thoughts as well? counterflow looks like a Junkatrol 80% model looks like a GMP

So the return can inhale gobs of flue gases to efficiently distribute that CO throughout the house! I'm glad you caught this but I do have a couple of questions about the repairs shown.

The filter is too big and will continue to depressurize the CAZ. It is supposed to have a cover interlocked to the gas control.

I'd be worried about getting blowback in the right furnace when the left fires up.

I hope you removed that Ameri-Therm vent damper off the water heater and replaced the rotten pipe. In addition to those vent dampers sticking closed, this one is not secured to the draft hood and the pipe is rotten.

Did you reline the chimney?

Again, glad you caught it. Don't know how anyone could live in there.
