A noted psychiatrist was a guest speaker at an academic function where
Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi happened to appear.

Ms. Pelosi took the opportunity to schmooze the good doctor a bit, and asked him a question with which he was most at ease.

'Would you mind telling me, Doctor,' she askedd,'how you detect a mental deficiency in somebody who appears completely normal?'

'Nothing is easier,' he replied. 'You ask a simple question which anyone should answer with no trouble. If the person hesitates, that puts you on the track.'

'What sort of question?' asked Pelosi.

Well, you might ask, 'Captain Cook made three trips around the world and died during one of them. Can you tell me - Which one?''

Pelosi thought a moment, and then said with a nervous laugh, 'You wouldn't happen to have another example would you..?? I must confess I don't know much about history.'

That’s an excellent question that I’m sure many people would like to have answered.

We first have to consider a number of factors that may be involved. What mode or modes of transportation did Captain Cook use to make his now famous journeys? Was the same ship or plane used for all three trips and if not who funded or provided the various vehicles? If the trips were made by automobile, did the vehicle or vehicles meet or exceed accepted standards of environmental responsibility and fuel efficiency? Did Captain Cook operate the vehicle or vehicles himself or did he hire a professional? If so, was the person hired to operate the vehicle or vehicles a member of a recognized union and was this person provided with health insurance and paid time off? Finally, did Captain Cook actually make the trips himself or did he hire someone to impersonate him so he could claim the credit for making the trips? If so was the person hired a member of a recognized union and was this person provided with health insurance and paid time off? As you can easily see, this question is far too complex to be answered in the time we have here but I thank you all for coming and have a nice day.

I’m practicing to be a politician. How am I doing?
