Why you bit*hin?

because everytime i need a 1/4 ton expansion valve, nobody has one (like today )

nobody in my area carries 3/8's armaflex

the most popular fan blade in my area- 6.5 inch 5 blade cw and or ccw - does anyone around here have one on the shelf... um no

customer calls in, i need this thing running right now! somebody is going to die if thier beer mug isn't chilled!

lmfao!! yeah, ok, so you need some 3/8's armaflex, a fan blade, and a expansion valve that is nowhere to be found in this big ole city

geothermal is green? i would love to see hard evidence that geo systems a soo much better than air to air systems. there are mini splits that are more efficient that geo units.

they going to start a mini split pro forum next?

geothermal is not practical!!! to expensive for the average person to purchase! finding competent contractor's would be very fun for the homeowner! since there are so many competent air to air contractors out there

competent technicians are green!

like everything else, the solution is to throw parts at it

you're old system is ineficient ma'am you need to buy this newe 85 seer heat pump and 185% afue gas furnace, while we stick it on the sh*tiest duct system ever created, nor will we do a proper load calculation to ensure correct size.

we'll do a block load, because it's required by code to do a load calc, then we will make some chity transitions to mate you new unit to the old crappy leaky duct system that you have, because the installing contractor only cared about how much money he was making and cut every single corner possible. but we will install a new pad outside under your condenser because that's the only part of this whole bend you over ordeal you will be looking at. and if you're lucky, we will put in on the pad and it will be level

either way. "go green" is a fancy catch phrase for people to make more money. that's why it cost so much to "go green" it's the sales gimmick of the 21st century

On a practical note, Beach, stop in you supply house and order a Sporlan Q or BQ txv kit.

In a matter of a couple of minutes, you can build any TXV from 1/6 to 3 tons high, med or low temp, flare or sweat, internal or external equalized.

Saves running all over town.

Still working on the fan blade kit....

I could've sworn Lusker or Admin Dude put it up a year or two ago...but in doing a search just now I couldn't find it. The only thing I could find was something by coolerfixer - but that's not the one.

That's the only one I recall. It was from about a year ago:

http://hvac-talk.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=160963

I would like to see the Refrigeration & Icemaking section in the Pro-Technical area as well and I agree that at the same time we need to keep a general section open for Newcomers and Regular members. The point being, we need to have a dedicated Pro Forum yet we also need to maintain an open area for the new guys to use and get their post counts up.

However, let's think about this on a slightly different scale by rethinking how the Professional forums are presented currently and how we can make this presentation better.

First off, if you look at the Pro-Technical section, we now are fast approaching 20,000 threads in there. Basically, most of these threads area random, uncategorized mix of Residential HVAC, Commercial HVAC and Commercial Refrigeration discussions. I'm thinking we should create new Pro-Forums for each of these and move all the existing threads into their appropriate new Pro-Forum.

This would be a major undertaking indeed requiring a lot of time & effort, but even if it takes a year or more to accomplish, it would serve to organize the Pro-Forums as they should have been long ago when they were first set up.

Then, just as the new Geo forums have been presented both in General and Pro area, we'd have General and Pro area for all the others. This would leave the existing Residential, Commercial and Refrigeration general areas unchanged and open for Newbies and Regular members.

Now even if we were to do this, we would still need to self-police the General threads as we do currently with the aid of the mods on duty, so simply creating Professional Forums doesn't really wouldn't change what we do now.

Secondly, look at how we are set up to register new members. Essentially anyone can register and post in the general areas. Perhaps we should rethink this a bit too.

If we still want to have Residential HVAC, General Discussion, etc open to anyone OK. What can we do to set apart the others where we would only like to see someone with a least a little technical knowledge? We have the Pro-Membership requirements of course, but that leaves out all the Students and New Techs who look, lurk and learn even though they don't post. They're rather in H-Talk Limbo until they make 15 posts. We probably have no way to know how many are simply discouraged form sticking around because of this.

I'm suggesting we consider into a quiz to test a new member's basic HVACR knowledge. If he or she passes, they would get a higher access permission level...maybe not like full Pro, but enough to get them into the Pro-Tech areas and possibly the EF. I know from my work on the EF Challenge Quiz, there are mods to the quiz that would allow for such a setup.

To sum it all up, before we just move Refrig & Icemaking to a new Pro Forum, let's take a step back and look at the bigger picture here keeping in mind the potential new members we may be losing now and will definitely lose in the future if we close the door any more than it already is.

potential for new members, sure. i can see that.

but i also see lots of info going out to people we have no idea they have credentials to recieve such information that is given out.

so there was once a resi forum, and the pro forum.

so keep this one here, so we can hook line and sink pro's like happens from the resi forum.

personnaly going into the resi forum really aggrevates the crap outa me. read a couple of those threads, and i get pissed :) dunno why, may have something to do with the sorts of missed info and pure stupidity flying around in there.

but we need to jump on a bandwagon of "going green" but we cannot acknowledge an area of the trade that has been around the longest, and that everything else was built upon...

Good posts all!

I think there is the stress factor in refrigeration that scares a lot of people away too.

A couple of years ago I worked for an industrial mechanical outfit. I learned firsthand that in most instances larger accounts have redundant boiler and sometimes chiller systems in case of a mechanical failure. One system goes down on the weekend, simply shut if off and fire up the back-up unit....come back on Monday and order the parts you need.

When is the last time any of you refer guys ever had the opportunity to fire up the 'back-up' low temp rack when a store lost all their refrigeration (at 0200 on a Sunday morning)?

I think the long hours in the summer, coupled with the instability of being on call, mixed with having to always be focused and sharp.......and of course let's not forget the stress of the job....this is what keeps most out of the trade in my opinion.

Well, since we are in the refrigeration forum - yes, I was talking about commercial refrigeration when I made the comment about jpsmith's perceived experience...more specifically rack experience.

If we were in the residential HVAC forum, then yes - you would most likely school the vast majority of us refer guys.

I wasn't trying to imply that jpsmith was better.....or worse than you - simply making an observation is all.

Yes that's right it's why we meet here I just got some markets that have Carrier

Real simple.

I've been doing this for 14 years. I am hardly new.

Have I worked on the latest and greatest residential stuff? NO, and from what I am reading here about it, I DON'T WANT TO!

What you are describing sounds like a pretty typical day for me. Ice maker, rack down, no heat. I do it all.

At the end of the day, the refrigeration cycle HASN'T CHANGED. It doesn't matter what you are cooling or what you are heating, it ALL works the same.

When a tech "gets" that very simple fact, his life gets a WHOLE lot easier.

I hope if we DO get a pro area they spell refrigeration properly at least...

What's the big deal though..............really?

Most people that frequent this forum can smell a DIY'er a mile away;)

If it's a status type thing you're looking for, get used to being the 'forgotten' facet of the industry.

always the hero when ya leave....and the zero when you show back up.

I've done pretty good lately. I haven't paid for food at Logans in 8 months now :p Chilis manager said I can come in anytime for lunch. Ruby Tuesday usually hits us up for lunch about once or twice a month. And 2 weeks ago, we got lunch on the house at Red Lobster. That was pretty cool. I always get some biscuits when I go there....

Stupid fuk actually grabbed the lineset...looked at me, and said "charge is good"....I about lost it.

Then he told me that Amana defrost is intiated by the coil sensor, not the defrost clock.....After sayin that, he ohmed out the sensor and siad "its open, and its warm out so its good"...and that he wished I woulda left the system running....for 2 freakin days!!!! I don't think so. After that, he tried to describe to me the differences between frosted coil and frozen coil. I just nodded and smiled.

Sad thing is....he was trainin a new guy that was standin there watchin his every move

And after all was said and done....he saw my van sittin across the street and looked at his partner and was like "I wonder who that is...I might know em. I know a lot of people around here"....

And I chimed in "Thats my van." He got in his truck and left. :D
