Found unit not doing anything. Customer said he had replaced fuse on the circuit board and nothing happened. The breaker was tripped. I first checked all of the motors and compressor for a shorts to phase and ground. Found nothing. Went on to find that the board was making no voltage across or to the fuse. Bad board! I took the board off and found the problem-it had let the smoke out. The problem terminals were the purple wire which was a line voltage and the black wire going to the drain line selonoid looked a little burned. To be fair the terminal on the other side was a little chared and it was an empty terminal. I took the lines off of the selonoid and measured OL ohms. I went through all of the ohm settings and found nothing. No continuity to ground either. I got something like 1400 ohms on the 208 contactors(I think that is what 1.4 means on the 200K scale)?
I am not sure if the dump selonoid is solid state or is just small. Anyway, my partner insisted that we place an inline 3 amp fuse in the line and start it up after we changed the board. We did and the icemaker ran fine.
I figured the only way to energize the dump selonoid was to run a clean cycle, so we did. The line did not drain and the instructions said that it would within 30 seconds or so. I checked for voltage to the selonoid and only got 120 on the white line, nothing on the black. I checked the fuse and it was good and I then checked upstream of the fuse and was not getting any power on the black line.
2 questions-at OL ohms, isn't this selonoid bad? If not, is it solid state or something else that I have not been accustomed to?
Also, shouldn't I be getting power to energize the dump selonoid in the cleaning cycle?
Thanks guys, I don't work on these much, but I hope that does change some in the future. I hear there is good business in the the icemaker repair.

The S series energize the dump valve at the start of either the clean or ice cycle. Check the board and see if you have two green lights. You should only have the curtain light on. If the sump fill light is on you won't get any water added to the system.

What voltage ice machine is this???
Are you working on a 120V ice machine and tracing a neutral? Or is it a 240V machine and your not receiving total voltage to the solenoid.

when testing don't measure to ground and it is solid state

I don't recall a curtain light. I had a light to choose what type of ice to make(nugget came up and I don't know how to choose the other option, but nugget is what was needed). Other than that, the led lights were scrolling up and down. I did not view the lights in the actual test mode.

Yes
Does your meter read Mega Ohms ?
Does it read OL if you hold each test lead in either hand?

You can't choose what type
and the Christmas tree lights is a short cycle timer I think 5 min.

 It's not to late to call for a warranty tech
They won't be mad if you tell the truth :p
We'll know if your telling to truth ;)

I have a Fieldpiece SC66 that I was using. OL reads if it isn't sensing any continuity and also if the leads aren't touching as you asked.
It reads 200 ohms, and 200K ohms. I am not sure exactly how many Mega Ohms works out to be.

The ship date was 11/28/2007 and there is a 3 year parts and labour warranty on this flaker. I guess I just saw the S and assumed cuber. There are very few of these around our area and I have only worked on a couple of machines. BTW, an evaporator went on an 800 and our cost was C$2,300. Strangely, the customer bought a new Hoshizaki.

What is a "hall effect switch" used in these flakers and how does it work?

They must have gotten tired or you calling them so much Beach, so they have put a reference on their website. You'll have to find something else to do on Saturday nights now! Now thats a LOL!

Is there a good general ice machine course that a tech can take to become more familiar with most of the popular brands, or do you have to take factory specific training on location? I am not in refrigeration work, but I am coming across more customers that are requesting this type of service.
Also, is the labor warranty available only through the listed dealers/service companies?
Thanks for all of the sincere replies to this post. Unlike some others, I am still learning. But I do have my H3-1 License now (first try, no prep class)!

"So-called "Hall effect sensors" are readily available from a number of different manufacturers, and may be used in various sensors such as rotating speed sensors, fluid flow sensors, current sensors, and pressure sensors. Other applications may be found in some electric airsoft guns and on the triggers of electropneumatic paintball guns."
This is from Wikipedia. They barely cover flakers in the service school but will answer specific questions. You have to take the course every year to be warranty authorized I've been told. I get paid to go to the course so I take it every year. You always pick up something you hadn't realized before even if you work on the machines a lot. It really helps to have worked on a few machines so you are comfortable with the ice machine jargon at the course.
