My colleagues and I have a question. We have been working on a beer cooler for almost 3 months. We have fixed leaks, recharged, replaced the cap but it never cools below 40 degrees. Today, it appeared half of the cooler was colder than the other side. We removed the thermostat and relocated it to the warmer side. It seems like the compressor shuts off before it should. It runs for about 30 seconds up to 5 minutes sometimes and then shuts off. Could it be the overload on the compressor?

Yep, you need to know temperatures, presures, voltage, and current draw before you can make a proper diagnosis.

Just giving it a try with the little info you have provided, but is the compressor hot to the touch? If it is excessively hot, it may be the overload. Also, there may be a problem with the evaporator being too cold for the particular thermostat you are using, for example, a constant cut out thermostat will always open when the sensing element senses it is cold enough. So if you have fixed leaks or changed the cap tube, then the evaporator could be colder than designed. Just giving it a try. Good luck.

coils clean?

didn't see that in your three month report :)

i fix alot of problems, by simply doing a little P.M. :)

I'm thinking, off the cuff, undercharged.

I would need pressures and temps to make a proper diagnosis, but the symptoms sound right.

why is the compressor shutting off?

Did you change L-L filter ?
you might have moister in system and freezing up
making your comperssor to run into a vacum get hot and go off on thermal overload

What controls the compressor cutting in and out, pressure control or thermostat ( is it a thermostat in the evaporator or on the wall in the cooler)
Is the condenser fan still running when the compressor kicks off?

Need a bit more information about the setup really. Pressures, size of cooler etc.

well i'm back and as you can see there are many things that can happen...because of not knowing the s/h & s/c, pres. etc. I can only shoot from the hip...(and if there is any s.a.s.s. members out there give me a shout and we'll go shooting) Any where you put the t stat in a beer cooler isn't going to matter as you don't have much conditioned space, although a delta t across your coil would be nice to know. if there is any foam at the tap it could possibly be due to a dirty trunk line and you will know this due to a foul smell at the stub out where the trunk takes the run of heat exchange or it could be due to the fact that (and i'm shooting from the hip)you just don't have enough pumping capacity:eek:there I said it...i couldn't say with out any more information 10/4;) is this critical charge or does it have a txv? where is the cond. and if above how far?
