The Marine shrugged and replied, 'A slight recoil.'

I don't usually read your posts because for the most part I don't agree with YOUR opinions or view on things. I did however geta smile out of this one. Being a veteran I agree with the slight recoil response. It's a job and as a soldier, marine, sailor you need to carry it out.

I must have missed something because I don't see where it's obvious that Couric is out of touch with reality. Clue me in on this one.

I think she asked the question because she was hoping for a response that would evoke emotion in someone watching/listening to the interview. The soldier was just too smart to fall for it.

She doesn't understand that the only reason she can do that is because of people that have given their lives and are still giving their lives for her to have the right to say whatever she wants. I'm pretty sure Katie Couric is intelligent enough to know that she owes her freedom to the people who are willing to fight for it. I also don't believe(based on Bootlen's account of the interview) that she crapped on anyone. She was trying to get an answer that would evoke emotion from the viewers, that's her job. If you don't like it then maybe her style isn't for you, but that doesn't make her ignorant. As a matter of fact, your statement makes you incredibly presumptuous, how can you make a statement like that about someone as worldly as Couric?

That I totally agree with, in an earlier post I actually said that the soldier was too smart for what she was trying to do .

This one I'm not so sure about. I think that she was hoping for a "it felt great, I'm a psycho killer, big bad marine type of answer in order to infuriate anti-war people. But who knows.

My point is that Couric is a very intelligent woman and she knows exactly what she is doing. She is not "out of touch" or ignorant, she was trying to manipulate the soldier into saying something publicly that he probably should have kept private.

Questions such as the one she asked the Marine are right up there with asking a surviving family member how they felt to watch their family be killed in an accident, or how someone is going to cope with their child being killed/abused etc. Sensationalistic journalism for lack of a real story.

I can understand the question being asked as many listeners might wonder what goes through a sniper's mind before and after a shot.Those that never served don't understand what being a solder is.
A solder just does it.

As far as Katie being a liberal, I really don't see it. Being corporate owned I would guess Katie's on a rather short leash. Remembering Dan Rather's demise I don't think the corp wants deja vu.

Anyway it goes the solder had a great answer.

My father was in the Pacific, WW2, lots of killing. When I would ask him about it, he refused to answer and changed the subject, just like any soldier who actually had todo killing. Its a job where either you kill or be killed, not something to make smart remarks over.
